General & Others Unpopular Opinions?

I would have found Vegapunk more interesting if he hadn't a devil fruit to explain his intelligence and that his inventions were all his, the results of his imagination, without him researching for and using ancient technology as models.
No, the fruit doesn't explain his intelligence. His intelligence has always been a thing. The fruit just helps him keep track of all the ideas he gets for inventions and crafts.
He had to eat it so his brain could remember/record all of the stuff he does.

One huge problem with the introduction of the Celestial Dragons and how openly evil and tyrannical they are, and making the World Government increasingly cartoonishly evil as tje story went on is that it made it very hard to view even the good marines as heroes or the better alternative to pirates, at best making them look incredibly stupid for helping the WG despite its atrocities or being unaware of said atrocities.

They might have looked better and the story may have been better as well if the Celestial Dragons and Gorosei were at least pragmatic enough to try to put up a benevolent facade and keep their evil under camouflage.

Completely agree with this, I could not say it better myself. Oda has put too much flanderisation and narrative tryharding post TS. The WG were sufficiently evil enough pre TS with Sabaody, Ohara flashback, Water 7 and Enies etc and we saw how corrupt the Marines were with Nezumi, Buster Calls, Akainu etc too.

One Piece feels like its trying to be AOT and similar series now and not in a good way. Trying way too hard, getting too bleak and misery porn.

For me the tonal balance pre TS was MUCH better and even though recent chapters have felt better in that regard, Oda trying to humanise the holy knights and make them seem quirky comes off as tone deaf and very uncomfortable and even Gunko herself in this chapter felt far too edgy, like some angsty, gloomy/emo teenager wrote her dialogue.

Although I know I am being particularly nitpicky and maybe a bit hypocritical about the holy knights too.

The Cd's were always comically evil, but at least in Sabody it seemed like their killings were pretty arbitrary and random, and also somewhat small scale, so it makes sense why people might look the other way.
But post timeskip we have the hunting games plot, which just makes it overly dumb. The idea that countries can be wiped completely off the map without anyone noticing or caring is just dumb, and more fit for dystopian fantasy as opposed to a pirate story where word spreads very easily. Are we really supposed to believe that: WB, Kaido, Shiki, Captain John, Big Mom, Roger,Rayleigh, Gaban, Kuma and more all just told no one about what happened? Even though God Valley was likely a country with trading partners, people who left the island for tourism etc...

and generally, I think its pretty obvious the CD's werent even planned, since they only appear like 500 chapters in, despite never being mentioned before hand, and the Gorosei not being portrayed that way, or wearing the space suits.

Completely agree, the slave hunting was the breaking point of the series for me, it felt very seinen type stuff, just too bleak, too much like IRL conspiracies and just overwhelming really, I felt like I was reading something like AOT or Berserk or idk. It's gonna be even worse in the anime with the voice acting, music, sound effects and whatever egregrious filles Toei will add to it too ofc. (PTSD flashbacks to Atlas charging her arm up for 40 seconds at least, even though it was a "historic gag reference" to early sci-fi and action anime.

The part about all those infamous, extremely important and powerful pirates who lived for decades after God Valley never mentioning it once along with their "idol" or at least former captain Xebec really infuriates me and proves the series has a ton of improvisation, filler and retconning too.

Imu destroying Lulusia so easily like that also extremely bothers me and I'm glad you brough that up. It all feels for shock value and forced tension. As some people said, why didn't he ever nuke any island where the SHs were? Why use a buster call at Egghead especially after they failed before? They wanted to wipe out Vegapunk and all his research right? I know they wanted the Mother Flame but they didn't even get it after all that and all the Gorosei being there right? We're still waiting to see what happened to York, Stussy and such and how Devon will use Saturn's identity now but also with Saturn being dead and Garling replacing him, sigh lol.

I swear to Goda, the series has become far too much about chasing clout now, shock value, misery porn, extremely recycled and forced gags like its Family Guy or any series that goes on too long but Family Guy especially with how overly long and egregious its gags can get, how extreme. (PTSD flashbacks to Fishman Island Sanji especially or Usopp's extremely gross and ridiculous OTT twisting spiral eyes and tongue at Dressrosa like WTF?!)

I thought the Celestial Dragon's suits were to imply they were from space and thus hiding they could be aliens but then again not all Celestials wear them obviously, so maybe they were just brainwashed to believe they needed them (and being dumb enough to fall for it too) but now it seems to be more diver suits too and to prepare them for the world being flooded even more and thus in case they might drown otherwise? But again, not all Celestials wear them like the Holy Knights and Gorosei ofc, so why should the "lower/fodder" Celestials wear them then?

This shit really makes my head hurt lol.

The Celestial Dragons being from space theory was fun back in the day, especially with the Enel cover story. Doesn't seem like its really possible anymore though lol. Idk if Oda will actually commit to the moon stuff or that was a one time thing.

I think he foreshadowed some narrative elements which he will stick to, while others, like the DF numbers & nakama goroase, he swept aside after readers caught up with, in an attempt at subverting and surprising.
The moon may have been the macro plotpoint to the sky island's micro, but as of now it doesn't seem like it'll be incorporated into a present-day arc beyond a little flashback or a nod like with the mural.

I have a slim bit of hope since Lindbergh has the same sort of tech as the weird people and minks on the moon, the mural appearing in Elbaf and Oda wouldn't done that cover story with Enel if it wasn't gonna be important too.

https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/91p1oy
Also Urouge has yet to reappear unless Oda retcons his fruit and gives it to Burgess, which I would fucking HATE immensely, almost as much as what he did to Kidd too. Some people think Burgess has his fruit but thats not how Urouge's fruit works at all, so it cant be his.

But this is all very slim hopes/copes and wishful thinking ofc.

Oda really wanted to do a sci-fi gundam/mecha manga after One Piece many years ago now and he's definitely compensating for that in the story now too with Franky, Vegapunk/Egghead and such and I am certain we will go to space inevitably, either in this story or a sequel series after One Piece at worst.

But Enel will return too and thats gonna involve the moon and what he found up there too, sooner or later but Elbaf would be the perfect arc for this if not Egghead beforehand, sadly.
