General & Others Unpopular Opinions?

Absolutely agree with @Buusatan94 , @Kizaruber Eats and @soupongo on how comically evil CD are.

I mean, when you read something like Promised Neverland, where the whole premise is that half of the world is populated by monsters raising people as livestock, it is expected that they would have those wild hunts and zero regard for human life. In OP you'd expect evil government that tries to conceal their being evil, otherwise Coby's "Imma join the Marines because Marines are good guys" is stupid af, whoever enforces obviously evil government is also considered evil. Check Star Wars with their stormtroopers armies and evil army commanders, pirates are present there as well, but no good character wants to join the stormtrooper army, everyone knows that stormtrooper=bad.

The more I read the story, the less I enjoy the world building in OP, which is sad, it used to be one of my favorite parts of the story.

For years, people made fun of arcs like Skypiea and Long Ring Island for not having much to do with the broader story of the manga, but imo this isn't really a big deal. The broader story of all these factions clashing isn't very good, nor is anything with the WG really. One Piece pre TS can be considered better simply because there was more of a focus on adventure. Arcs like Skypiea don't really exist post TS and the manga suffers a lot for it, with no real adventure in years. Even an adventure in the Giant island has been interrupted by what will probably be some goofy WG conspiracy, instead of just doing giant villains. The problem is this will make the giant country feel small and uninteresting.

This! I was so looking forward to a story with giants only, there are different islands with giants whom Harujin or whatever his name is tries to unite under his rule, there's wild card Loki, who's imprisoned but freed by Luffy, but we still have questions how much of a good guy he is, there's a lore mural and ancient laboratory, why do we need that WG interference?
I'd prefer Shanks#2 and his gang to appear on the next island, because it feels too much like plot convenience for HK to appear on Elbaph just as SHP got there, I really liked it better before any of HK arrived. Also, their plot with kids kidnapping is stupid, especially if they're like "oh there's fire, ok the kids can die for all we care" - didn't you need them alive or anything? I find this very stupid and annoying.

I am a fan of the idea that there's more giant countries and it relates to what Saul told Robin way back then, with other giant countries disliking eachother, and Road getting annoyed at Zoro for not understanding this as a human who fights other humans.
However, the SH most likely wont even visit any other giant countries, which is disappointing.

Yeah, the problem with OP is that it kinda bit more than they can chew, there are so many interesting countries yet there are also so many repetitive themes "something was bad, SHP showed up and got rid of the bad, now we good". Arguably WCI is a bit of fresh air as a rescue arc w/o "fixing" the whole kingdom. And a cover story with Germa escape plus Pudding kidnapping was actually quite interesting, as well as BBP moments afterwards. One of the reasons I liked Reverie a lot was because something was shown happening without SHP being directly involved in it, same with cover stories.

So, in the one hand, I want to see more of those giant islands, on another hand, I kinda wish OP to end already, it's been too long as is.

Oda keeps recycling his formulas way too much, its frustrating. Even the memes about it get recycled because they continue to be constantly relevant haha.

Oda really wants to have the whole cake and eat it.

This AWFUL cover story with Yamato which makes even the egregiously long and dull cover stories before it (some of them I mean, some were decent like the Pudding one as you mentioned, despite how much it ruined Katakuri) and the absolute letdown that Elbaf has been in various ways is not helping but it's not surprising either at this point. The cover story feels like Oda is trolling or just doesn't care, like he's been forced to do it, some kind of sponsorship/contract or something. Just phoning it in.

Oda won't even give us around the world updates post Egghead and never mind during Elbf and cutting away from it, which did wonders for Wano and Egghead too. Maybe he's mad that we enjoyed those chapters a lot more than the actual arc chapters lmao.

WCI and Zou were def more refreshing arcs but my god, Egghead really jumped the shark even worse than Onigshima/Wano 2nd half did and the story feels lke Oda is constantly putting down train tracks as the train keeps driving down the track, so the track is unfinished and he keeps adding to it, with the train refusing to stop and the tracks just keep coming if that makes sense? Just constantly moving the goalposts or "stretching out" the story endlessly?

I really miss when One Piece didn't take itself so seriously, it wasn't as edgy, gritty and conspirational, political, drama, thriller heavy, it had elements of those things but not to such an overwhelming extent and there was still adventure in the majority, camraderie, humour, much better pacing and no milkings of mysteries for years or even decades only to get the most lackluster resolutions if they get answered and never being able to live up to the years or decades of desperate anticipation too.

Even though I really glaze Pre TS, I actually really started to dislike One Piece from Water 7 onwards tbh and thus the sagas of the SHs especially Luffy really suffering for so many arcs in a row and Sabaody and Marineford were my breaking points. I was close to dropping the series when Ace died but the hype of Shanks arriving to Marineford and the timeskip kept me invested and curious but I regret that immensely now many, many, years later.

I don't think I can read the series weekly anymore, especially with all the regular breaks too. I might have to drop it for a while to let it get as far ahead as possible, even though we get 33 chapters a year at best now as opposed to around 49 and that has drastically affected the pacing but also Oda's own choices with the story and thus how he's executing have worsened it far more too ofc.

I keep dreading the possibility that we're gonna get more month long breaks in future, for the live action or any other reasons potentially too. One Piece is WAY too much of a cash cow and important to Shonen Jump/Shuiesha to go monthly even never mind on a hiatus ofc so we're really stuck here for the longest ride still, even in the so called "final saga" where Oda said he was restructuring the story, yet it feels like it's still mostly the same nonsense too.

I completely agree about the Reverie and some cover stories, they are such an immense breath of fresh air, it feels like we're actually being spoilt compared to the main story, it feels too good to be true compared to the sluggish breadcrumb and constant FOMO trolling of Oda for years now with his carrot on a stick writing and 5 million distractions of new mysteries constantly.

Elbaf is gonna be a really long arc I'm certain of it, I've always expected it and it's extremely important to Oda himself and inspired by the series that inspired him heavily for One Piece too (Vicky The Viking) and it's like "another Wano" for him but also for us and I don't see us moving on from Elbaf for a good few years especially at this pacing too. I could also hilariously be wrong about it but I doubt it. I remember when people thought Egghead would be a quick arc, a mere 5-10 chapters left around the time the York traitor shit was happening I think it was IIRC? That certainly aged well, now didn't it? LMAO!

Well...isn't this interesting? LMAO:

So much yes (and I've read your long rant, I feel similarly, although Ace & WB deaths actually were really well done imo.

I understand people who can tell me "well you don't like it, then stop reading", but I've been reading OP for half of my life, I am invested enough that I want to see it end. If I learned about OP now, I would probably not even bother starting it, 1000+ chapters AND ongoing seems too intimidating, that's the reason I never picked up Hajime no Ippo (the boxing manga).

Sometimes I think I will die before OP ends, and will never know what the hell OP is and will never see BBP vs SHP.
Oh well.
At least this forum keeps me somewhat entertained and gives me a sense of belonging, like I'm not the only one.

Exactly! Tysm for reading all of my rant there and I do agree Ace and WB's deaths were really well done but ironically they were their best parts too, as aside from that nice little brief backstory for Whitebeard, we didn't get a lot for either character and Ace shouldn't have died regardless imo. Him dying was a real jumping the shark moment for me especially when nobody on the Marine and WG side died too.

That's exactly it, the ones defending this are either so deeply invested like us but deeper in denial than Davy Jone's Locker and thus in deepest delusion or they got into it far more recently and got to binge all of it, without the pain of following it weekly for many years or even decades and watching other beloved series run for so long and thus come and go in the same time OP was nowhere even near the end.

I've been paranoid for years that I'll die before OP ends at this godforsaken pacing and I have almost genuinely died twice if not more than already so that doesn't help my fear of my own mortality and thus impending death whenever that is too. The same applies to Oda too, the more the series gets milked and he drags it out too, the more I fear we might lose him before the series ends and it's another Berserk type situation with Kentaro Miura ofc. We also lost the Yugioh author a short while ago too sadly ofc and now Franky's voice actor has had to step down and the longer Oda takes to end One Piece, the more voice actors we will lose for One Piece as we've lost a lot already both in the sub and the dub and the more Oda and thus Shuiesha/Shonen Jump toy with fate too.

I was defending Oda strongly lately, saying he deserves to go for this long, its his magnum opus and I respect him and such but at the same time, all the health issues he's had, the older he gets and thus less able, more tired/weary and closer to inevitable death regardless and the less of his own life he gets to live, especially outside of his work and thus with his family and friends too, the worse I fear for him and the series too.

I've been terrified for many years I'll never see the end of OP for one reason or another and the more it drags out like this, the stronger and thus more unavoidable those fears get. I just want to see certain things from One Piece including its ending and what the One Piece actually is so I can ironically be at "One Peace" and move on and truly let go of the series like I've done with Bleach, Naruto, Fairy Tail and so on. (Jojo is still ongoing ofc but I've dropped it after Jojolion ended so awfully for me after spending most of its 11 year run strugglign to keep interest in it too. 11 fucking years for 1 part alone lol, all because its monthly now too and around 110 chapters long!)

I'm really scared about the BBP in that regard and despite all my Shanks and RHP slander, from the BEGINNING of the series, I've always held the SHs, RHP and BBP to the highest standards and anticipation and I fear like with other parts of One Piece and other series, I'm going to be brutally let down ultimately and as Oda has been butchering the SHs and RHP so far, it's only gonna get worse in future too to an unavoidable, disastrous, disappointment conclusion too.

I know it's very pessmistic of me and it directly contrasts my fierce glazing and defense of Oda and OP recently, but its so hard to not be so cynical and tired after following this freaking series for 21 years now or so. 2 decades of my life following this godamn series. And we're still probably another 10 years from the ending at least with this pacing especially! Unless we get the dreaded Bleach style extreme speedrun ending and also like that part of Oden's flashback when we saw just highlights of Rogers and Oden's journey to Laugh Tale and the One Piece as a few panels, much like Kaido's grossly disappointing and underwhelming flashback too or even how blatantly the end of Wano and even dare I say Egghead were rushed and the former was used to promote Film Red too. Wano was rushed in the end ironically to promote a non-canon movie instead, fucking awesome. A clickbait movie that seemed to promise so much for Shanks and then it's non-canon, with a lot of made up stuff for it that seemed canon and just made his character look far worse too, thanks Oda.

And aye, this forum keeps me going too. I think that's another reason why I can't truly let go of One Piece yet and drop it too, this community for better and for worse, keeps me vested in it even if I get fed up here as I do a lot and with OP and Oda constantly too lmao. It's the sunk cost fallacy really, we've invested so much time in this journey, we can't just abandon it like a father in One Piece/anime or turn the ship around and go back so to speak.
But if the series is really more about the journey than the destination too, then my god the destination is so not gonna be worth the journey and thus time and effort, since the journey itself is this absolutely awful and dragged out post TS.

I almost exploded literally when Oda said the story was effectivelly all filler up to the start of the final saga and new people can start reading it from here instead. And the constant recurring brutal reminder that he meant One Piece to be 5 years long only and only planned for that much too naturally ofc. And therefore, a LOT of important scenes, characters and plot elements were just improvised and thus last minute additions, never planned.

Funny you mention Hajime No Ippo as a former very close friend of mine really loves that series and tried a few times to get me into it but I HATE boxing and also as you said, with it being over 1000 chapters long (not even just in regards to boxing which makes it much worse for me too and also makes me wonder how the fuck a boxing series can even be THAT long too), I have ZERO intention to read or watch any series THAT LONG! Even 200-300 episode/chapter series feel a bit daunting when they would feel like warm ups for me in the distant past and I used to want series to be MUCH longer like 500-600 chapters at least, boy do I EVER regret that sentiment!!! LMFAO!!!

Seriously though, I've wanted to rewatch and get back into Gintama for example but IIRC, its around 500-600 episodes and it had to be concluded with a movie, like what AOT is doing atm too? Gintama anime was axed a few times like its the Japanese/weeb version of Futurama funnily enough but with Gintama, MOST of it is filler, slice of life and just gag stuff, so that puts me off but I used to love stuff like that at one point and the manga was fucking hilarious too but the anime really enhanced it with the sublime, even more hilarious voice acting and such too.

That's also why I am reluctant to rewatch/reread Naruto and Bleach too, as much as I've really wanted to in the past, not to mention reliving some moments of each series that made me wanna drop them and get extremly frustrated with them, especially in Bleach much more so than Naruto lmao.

I don't think any series should go above 300 episodes or chapters, to me that feels like a nice cutoff point, maybe 400 at an extreme push BUT nothing more than that ever, so its less than a half of a 1000 still at least! A lot of series can tell amazing stories in a fraction of that time too and feel satisfying enough with character arcs, world building and such but I do think somewhere between 100-300 is the ideal amount, although I'd have to read/watch a lot more series to truly decide on that too.

To think, some of us started One Piece as children or teenagers and now we're adults....even balls deep into adulthood by now like myself, that is a depressing thought lol.

The longest running manga AFAIK is 40 years old and I am CERTAIN Oda wants to beat that record and truly break all records he can, to be the top dog in every way he can. Others have mentioned Oda has that extreme kind of ego and they have to watch their words around him, so it would make sense too. He's done almost 30 years now and even though he was meant to finish by this year at worst, ideally by his 50th birthday on New Year's Day of all days and tour the world with his family and retire, it seems like he's not gonna get to do that until he's 60 at least! Or worse!

Oh gosh, I keep going and going dont I? Like a Duracell battery or a boulder rolling down a hill? LMAO! Its just so hard not to have my boomer rants about One Piece after following it for so long but you totally understand as you've said and shown and I really appreciate getting to vent like this and voice out my fears and have them heard and know others like yourself share the same fears too ofc.

:nicagesmile::saden::risiflip::emohiyo:

*EDIT* WAIT NEVER MIND, THE OLDEST RUNNING MANGA IS APPARENTLY ALMOST 60 YEARS OLD?! WTF?!:

The longest-running manga series currently still in publication is "Golgo 13" (ゴルゴ13), which began serialization in 1968 and is still ongoing.

Here's a bit more information:

  • "Golgo 13": is a manga series created by Takao Saito, and it follows the adventures of a hitman named Doug Golgo 13.
  • The series is known for its realistic depiction of violence and its focus on the character's skills and intellect.
  • While "Golgo 13" is the longest-running series, there are other long-running manga series, such as "Kochikame" (also known as "Kochi-Kame"), "Ouke no Monshou", "Kinnikuman", and "Tsuri Baka Nisshi".
The one I was thinking of is from Shonen Jump and called Kochikame, its a postman or policeman or something like that with a monobrow?

OMG I see Kinnikuman too or as some of you might know it as "Ultimate Muscle" from seeing it on Toonami like me too!

Jojo has been running since the 80s too and Dragonball has been going that long too ofc, yeesh....

With AI able to generate manga pages now too somewhat reasonably well from what I've seen, I can only imagine how much a series could get milked FOREVER potentially as long as the technology and thus resources still exist for it too.....ODA TAKING MAD NOTES RIGHT NOW! Just do a Jojo and reboot your entire series too, why not?! Same with DBGT to DBS? Well GT is meant to be non-canon too, right? And its anime only so all purely filler so well thats answers it actually then ofc? /s.

I know Oda was experimenting with ChatGPT in its much younger stages before Egghead started too, for ideas for One Piece and such and he really liked what it did too, so God knows what it could do for him and One Piece now if he wanted to go down that route (Goda forbid) , especially if uses the most advanced versions of it or even gets exclusive access to one that even we can't use lol.

It's quite umconfortable to watch Bonney and S-Snake and all the fanservice around them, knowing their ages.
I'm scared of what Gunko's age is gonna be too due to this. Not to mention Oda's unhinged comments about Rebecca and that fan message to him recently.

Also I tried to check comments on some reddit posts , where I got some of these memes form and I got jumpscared by topless Bonney from that extra stuff they added in the anime.

:risitameh::shame:

It's always been a problem in manga, oversexualising very young characters. Never been a fan of that, and Soda's awkward explanations about S-Snake power doesn't make it less creepy. Topless Bonney is also creepy af.

:nicagesmile::saden::risiflip::emohiyo:

Yes, I agree that sweet spot is probably 200-300 chapters for the manga. NGL, I sometimes pick up manga b/c it is already finished, like I've read recently Undead Unluck, was interested in the series for quite some time, but didn't want to read yet another unfinished story, hahaha. A story has to end so that we can appreciate it in it's entirety. And it should end on a high note rather people being exhausted of it.

I probably wouldn't mind a bit of a speedrun to the end here, given that we're definitely will get some spin-offs, vivre cards and SBS to clear some stuff. And those spin-offs might be sometimes better than the original, I mean, Shokugeki no Sanji made me read Shokugeki no Soma, being a Sanji fan is usually quite painful these days, especially when Toei makes him go heart-eyes after Bonney (when in manga he was heart-eyes to Nami).

Thanks for vibing with me in your rant, this is exactly what keeps me going!
