Volume 110 - Discussion Thread (November 1st, 2024)

I just reread the part about who fed Luffy

So even Oda himself doesn't outright says who did it
He just says it's done in the speed of light and says "even I myself don't know who did it"

Why did we all accept it is only Kizaru who could have done it ?

What if it was Sanji? Or even a Vegapunk?

:willight:
Bcs sanji was paralyzed by saturn dumbooooooo

I like the Admiral backstories for Fuji and Ryo and hope Oda will actually integrate it into the plot.

Gotta say though, I think the revelation that Kizaru fed Luffy has just made the character a shambles. Somewhat redemption powerwise, but all over the fucking place as a character. “Unclear Justice” is not an excuse for absolutely incoherent actions.

So he feds Luffy in secret. Presumably because he wants to save his friends and thinks Luffy is the only way to do it, and not just because he worships Nika, but I’ll put that one on hold for now.

But he’s also blatantly attempting to murder his friends throughout the arc with zero guarantees that Luffy and the Strawhats will actually be able to save them? Like, the Sanji blocks light scene, wtf was Kizaru expecting to happen there? What happens if Sanji does not have a totally unexplained, science defying ability that Kizaru has no way of knowing about? Is he just launching the laser and thinking “ah it’s cool, I’m sure one of the Strawhats will do something about this.”

Then the great moment at the end where he gives Akainu both barrels for doubting his commitment, well, turns out Akainu was totally right, wasn’t he? Kizaru absolutely botched it. More than that, he deliberately botched it. Wtf is he getting furious at Akainu for? Akainu’s 100% right. Brilliant moment for the character utterly ruined.

Am I just supposed to buy that Kizaru is both a fabulous actor and an absolute mastermind genius who has perfectly orchestrated multiple scenarios of him looking like he has put his friends in mortal danger but is somehow aware of the fact the Strawhats will be able to save them? Except for Vegapunk, who he just gave up as dead, and in fact murdered.

Or Kizaru is not, in fact, planning anything, is basically acting on the seat of his pants the entire time and can’t make up his mind about what he actually wants to do, but still gets grossly offended when called out on it.

Really sours his arc on Egghead for me.
What do you fail to comprehend?
He was massively holding back and mentally nerfed but he also was trying to fulfil his duty of executing Vegapunk

He HOPED that Goofy would succeed in stopping him and save his friends, that's why he fed Goofy, but he was disappointed that even after that he still managed to kill his friend.

He did not lie to Akainu, he killed his friend. What did he botch?

He literally says speed of light! SPEED OF LIGHT! Who the fuck do you think can move in the speed of light.:tchpepe:

And both Sanji and Vegapunk were frozen.

You fucking dumb clown.:ClownStare:

THE KIZARUBER EATS, THE KIZARUBER EATS IS REAL!

What have I done?:

Chapter 1696: "The Racist Awakening! Zoro’s New Path and the Legend of Godhead Garling!"

The chapter opens with an intense stare-off between Zoro and Green Bull. Zoro’s intuition kicks in, and he grills Green Bull about his past. Green Bull, sipping a can of questionable green juice, nonchalantly admits, "Yeah, I was a cop. Best job ever, y'know? Arresting all those troublemakers." Zoro’s eyes widen. The former cop's casual tone resonates deeply with Zoro, as he reflects on his own days as a Pirate Hunter.

The Godhead of Racism Emerges!
Meanwhile, St. Garling, adorned in his ridiculous celestial noble outfit (feathered hat included), struts onto the scene. A flashback reveals Garling’s terrifying feats at the Battle of God's Valley, where he was crowned "Ultimate Champion" for his sheer ruthlessness. The narrator drops a bombshell: St. Garling wasn’t just any Celestial Dragon. He was known as the Godhead of Racism, whose doctrine spread fear and segregation like wildfire. He didn’t just fight pirates—he hunted anyone and anything that challenged the "natural hierarchy."

Zoro's Kindred Spirit Moment
Zoro, listening to Garling’s speech about "returning to the old ways," feels something stirring deep inside him. A tear rolls down his cheek. "I thought I was just chasing strength all this time," Zoro whispers to himself. "But...I was born to hunt." St. Garling sees the conflicted swordsman and immediately recognizes the racist potential within Zoro’s very soul. He approaches Zoro and casually slaps a "Slave Hunter" badge on his chest.

Betrayal of Luffy?!
The scene cuts to Luffy and the crew chilling on the Sunny. Zoro appears out of nowhere, swinging open the door dramatically. "Captain," Zoro announces, "I can’t do this anymore. The Pirate Hunter Roronoa Zoro is dead. From now on, call me… Slave Hunter Roronoa Zoro." Luffy, who stopped listening three words in, just smiles and nods, confusing Zoro into thinking he got his approval.
Sanji immediately tries to kick some sense into Zoro, but Garling swoops in, deflecting the attack and monologuing about how "certain lesser races" are naturally subservient. Jinbei watches all this, clenching his fists. The Fish-Man’s patience snaps when Green Bull quips, "Never did care much for Fish-Men anyway!" Jinbei lets out an anguished scream before literally exploding in rage, leaving everyone speechless.

Usopp’s Disease Strikes Again!
Usopp, completely unbothered by the chaos, sits in a corner. "Man, this sure sounds like a lot of trouble," he mutters before collapsing with an internal monologue explaining that he was "just too useless to keep going in a manga like this." It’s later revealed he succumbed to the fatal condition known as Bum Disease. Nami cries but then realizes that Usopp’s already dead, so she just moves on.

Yasopp’s Inevitable Fate
Word of Usopp’s death reaches Shanks, who breaks the news to Yasopp. Yasopp, already emotionally wrecked, whispers, "It’s because I didn’t pay enough Chil D. Support…" and promptly perishes from the ultimate deadbeat affliction.

Mihawk’s Dark Secret Revealed
In a shocking twist, Mihawk appears from the shadows, revealing that he too shared Garling’s philosophy. He smugly recounts his old lesson to Zoro about not using cannons to hunt rabbits, revealing it was actually coded racism all along. "Swords are meant to cut down the weak, Zoro. Not help them." Zoro’s admiration for Mihawk reaches new heights.
The final panel shows Zoro grinning wickedly, standing alongside St. Garling and Mihawk. He drops his black bandana over his eyes and says, "It’s time to hunt."
To be continued…
End of Chapter.

You're overcomplicating it.

Kizaru was doing everything in his power to reduce the damage, feeding Luffy heightened the chances of escape for as many of his friends as possible. If Luffy is out of the picture, Kizaru has no excuse not to destroy everyone including Bonney. He stalled long enough, Saturn was giving him direct orders to take them out when he was just chilling.

The only thing you can say is he should have stayed down longer from WSG, but I think he was actually still trying to protect Saturn to an extent, and the Strawhats started attacking him (plus he might have predicted it was about time for Luffy to be getting up).

Akainu was right, however so was Kizaru. He still stabbed his buddy right through the back which takes a lot to do, imagine Garp killing Ace in MF, let's see if someone has the balls to question him in that state, he would lose it.
It’s not overcomplicating anything, his actions makes zero sense because you can point to multiple occasions where Kizaru directly endangers all his friends lives without any guarantee that the Strawhats would save them.

The guy literally went out his way to fight Sentomaru when he was ordered by Saturn not to lmao.

Like here, what, is Kizaru just gambling on Bonney being able to control the Pacifista? Hoping that Sanji will somehow be able to save all of them in time?

Cunningly directing all of his shots to miss vital organs?

The beginning of his Oscar-winning perfomance where he pretends to be surprised that Luffy has attacked him just before he cuts Bonney and Kuma in half?

Continuing to showcase his thespian talents by adding his gift for comedic reaction?

We can compare it to Garp in Marineford in that it would be really fucking stupid if after Garp took his obvious ”I can’t actually do this so am going to sandbag to Luffy” dive, he then... killed Ace anyway and put Luffy in literal mortal danger several times afterwards, relying on the Whitebeard Pirates to save him at the last minute.

Then complained about Sengoku daring to point out that he half assed things.

Kizaru’s story was compelling because it was coming across as the anti Garp in that he chose his orders rather than his loved ones, while Garp took the alternative approach. Bad thing to do, but the determination to do it can be respected.

Bipolar Kizaru who feeds Luffy once and does absolutely nothing else to help his friends, far less compelling.

Or I suppose he’s to be applauded for giving up when there was literally five Gorosei rampaging around the island and the only thing that saved Bonney and Kuma was a robot having a magic haki bomb rope.

Now, Kizaru genuinely just comes across as pathetic. And maybe that’s intentional from Oda’s behalf, given he did call himself a sad man, but I‘m not sure that it is entirely coming across the way it is intended.

THE KIZARUBER EATS, THE KIZARUBER EATS IS REAL!
lol I won’t go that far for the Wano thing

But it would have been great if they indeed knew each other or had some kind of interactions
Aye true! It is funny Kizaru wanted to go to wano though, makes me wonder what could have been. I would love to see more interactions with the higher tier Marines and Cipher Pol, we had Lucci talking shit to Akainu before sigh lol. I think it was in Film Stampede?

Scene: A sleek and minimalistic government office. The room is stark, with a single large window showing the vastness of Mariejois below. Kizaru, casually leaning against the window with his usual laid-back grin, faces Guernica from CP0, who stands in his pristine suit, his expression obscured by his mask. There’s an almost theatrical silence between them, both carrying an air of cold efficiency and indifference.

Kizaru: [drawling] “Maaah, look at that view. They really went all out, huh? It’s like a picture from a fancy art gallery…” [chuckles lazily] “A real masterpiece.”

Guernica: [tilts head slightly] “If you appreciate such things, I suppose. But art isn’t meant to be understood by everyone.”

Kizaru: [raising an eyebrow, amused] “Ooh? Deep thoughts for a guy in a mask. What are you trying to say?”

Guernica: [calmly, almost as if ignoring the jab] “Just that… interpretations differ. A work of art for some, a symbol of oppression for others. It's all… perspective.”

Kizaru: [sighs, stretching lazily] “Perspective, huh? I guess that’s true. Though, in the end, it’s all about who’s lookin’ down from the top, right? The ones on the ground probably aren’t enjoying the view as much.”

Guernica: [slightly adjusting his mask, voice unwavering] “There’s a certain beauty in knowing your role, Admiral. It allows the world to maintain… order.”

Kizaru: [nodding with mock seriousness] “Order, huh… You CP0 guys really love your rules and structure.” [pauses] “Must be exhausting, always chasing perfection.”

Guernica: [brief chuckle, almost imperceptible] “Perfection? Hardly. We simply strive to be efficient. Uncertainty and chaos are… hindrances.”

Kizaru: [grinning wider, a glint of mischief in his eyes] “Oooh, scary! You sound like you’ve read all the company manuals.” [light laughter] “You know, efficiency’s nice and all… but it’s a bit boring, don’t you think?”

Guernica: [pausing, voice measured] “Boredom… is a luxury. Perhaps one of the few we afford you Admirals.”

Kizaru: [leans forward slightly, playful but probing] “Heeey now, that’s cold.” [mock hurt tone] “I thought we were on the same team.”

Guernica: [matter-of-factly] “We are. But that doesn’t mean our methods are the same. You… enjoy the game, don’t you?”

Kizaru: [shrugs, smiling almost whimsically] “Well, everything’s a game if you’re not in a rush.”

Guernica: [voice lowering slightly] “Games have winners and losers. In our line of work, there’s no margin for losing, Admiral.”

Kizaru: [smirks, his voice almost whispering] “Maaah, sounds stressful. But then, you guys are always in such a hurry to clean things up. I like to take my time…”

Guernica: [voice carrying a faint, cold amusement] “Time is a resource we spend differently, Kizaru. We… preempt. You react. Both necessary approaches, but you and I… see the pieces differently.”

Kizaru: [eyes half-lidded, feigning a yawn] “Mmmm, I guess you could say that. But tell me…” [suddenly serious, eyes sharp] “When do the pieces become… people?”

Guernica: [a beat of silence, then quietly] “When they stray from their roles.”

Kizaru: [laughs softly, leaning back against the window] “See? That’s what I mean by scary.”

Guernica: [voice firm] “Fear is an inevitable part of our duties. It maintains… order.”

Kizaru: [tilting his head thoughtfully, almost curiously] “You ever wonder what you’d be without the mask?”

Guernica: [pauses, then in a voice so quiet it’s almost a whisper] “No. That’s the difference between you and me, Admiral. You enjoy wondering. I don’t have to.”

Kizaru: [a long pause, then a slow smile] “Maaah… Guess that’s why I’m not in CP0, huh?”

Guernica: [nodding slightly, voice now distant] “And that’s why the balance remains… undisturbed.”

Scene fades to black as the camera focuses on the distant city outside the window, the casual conversation contrasting with the tension beneath their words. Both men, despite their surface-level similarities, are worlds apart in philosophy.

Really sours his arc on Egghead for me.
Kizaru's unclear justice is so simple. He tries to do his job without any moral or emotional attachment, unlike the other Admirals who operates on their morals. Egghead was very personal for Kizaru, but he still tried to do his job because to him, emotions shouldn't be a factor when you're given orders. Fuji and Kuzan would've helped Vegapunk escape outright. Akainu and GB would be emotionally invested in making sure Vegapunk dies. Kizaru wanted Vegapunk to live, but his duty meant he had to kill him.

Feeding Luffy gave Kizaru a chance to save Vegapunk and the others without outright disobeying his orders. Kuma showed up instead, and made saving everyone impossible hence Kizaru's "it's over isn't it."

Kizaru now had no choice to kill his friends again, and even tried mercy killing Bonney and Kuma so that it wouldn't be painful. He even closed his eyes one time.
