I don't understand showing mercy to surrendered/retreating Pirates. Shanks has duty to protect the Island. Killing the attackers however brutally is correct way. Some one kills your loved ones and you can't attack them cause they are running away? What kind of retarded logic is that. This is not conventional warfare between nations. These are things killing and looting and running away.

A good part of his role in the story has been saving Luffy from the marines after luffy started it by burning their flag. It's hypocritical

If OP were any kind of darker HBO series, Shanks would be maintaining a torture chamber filled with fodders who ate precious fruits.

Do you want him to be a good pirate like Luffy? Do you want him to be evil? Or somewhere in the grey area? Would you like an evil twin and a good Shanks?

Please elaborate as to why!

Personally I want him to be good... Otherwise Luffy's whole backstory will be completely overturned, and all Shanks scenes would become insincere. Also I don't believe Oda would have the heart to make Shanks anything but good.

I prefer good. Anything else kind of ruins him. He's the ideal Luffy is trying to live up to. It would be really empty if he weren't that person from Chapter 1.

Some people seem to want him to be grey or evil just for the sake of it. Or they think it makes it good writing. There's nothing wrong with a good guy doing good things.

What hypocrisy? Shanks never claimed it is immoral for Navy to attack Luffy, they are too scared to go against them at full health, so they are attacking them when they are still recovering. Greenbull was free to attack Luffy, he is just too afraid of Shanks.

Luffy wasnt recovering, he was at a party lmao. Unlike Bart who was told he could leave or Kidds crew who surrendered. Whos really afraid of the new generation? Maybe the guy whos been obsessed with Blackbeard since before he had a bounty?

He's already a been portrayed as a neutral character. He does good for his friends but is ruthless to anyone who waves a pirate flag. His whole character is about maintaining balance.
