This is where we determine if Zoro killing Kaido happens or not. It was pointless to call it prior because killing Kaido was always going to be the last thing that occurred in this war if it were to happen. Now is the moment of truth.
It will happen, imo. Zoro and Kaido are right where they need to be for it to happen. They are just outside the capital for everyone to see. Zoro is a direct parallel to his ancestor Ryuma and one of Ryuma's legends were of how he slayed a dragon over the capital. He was also a one eyed swordsman, just as Zoro is. A not so subtle suggestion that history will repeat itself.

Kaido can literally fly
Yep, he can't even process the idea of being killed, he doesn't believe someone is able to.
Who knows what he is gonna do, if he goes for Luffy someone will have to save him since it looks like he is out.
Oda decided to pull out hakai to remove Zoro from the yonko fight and then to use the drug to start this other plot of the grim reaper and we have no idea what is the purpose of this. It's up to Oda. Luffy woke up 4 times with no much of explanations.
Zoro is a swordsman with adcCoc he has all the tools to do it and already proved to have enough power to do so. Hiryu Kaen scene happened btw.
And yea, just like any other straw hat Zoro has qualities that Luffy doesn't possess, he is not a completely useless crewmember. Unbellievable, i know.
However, I think we can agree that Zoro was setupped as a protagonist on par with Luffy when this arc started, or at least that Oda highlited Zoro more than any other of the crew outside Luffy. Yet, as the climax finally occurred, Oda has put him aside and he has been absolutely irrelevant plotwise.
You said that in 20 years of one piece he was never as important, which is true, zoro has never been as important as he has been in this arc, but you must also take in consideration that to reach this moment he has had only brief moments in most of the post time skip arcs despite being one of the "main trio", such as dressrosa, unlike nami, who despite not being present in dressrosa had tons of moments in wci, where zoro was completely removed.
If ZKK doesn't happen, one piece will lose an opportunity to be better, but fear not, it's definety happening.
