Ryuuma is definitely a previous holder of the title!
If Roger was WSS before Mihawk, then the title really took a dive when Mihawk attained it later. I mean Gol D. Roger would mid diff Mihawk and that is honestly embarrassing if that was what the new WSS was capable of and by portrayal and feats Roger and WB were the only ones who were equal. So I think that it was Rayleigh, not Roger. I think after Ryuma, Noland would have also been a good candidate for it. I still think that bald headed Gorosei is one of the WSS as well but he is from the Void Century.

Probably Roger, if the definition is everyone who uses a blade as a fighting style. I however like Den Den's interpretation, who said that those titles became relevant only once the great era of piracy started and Mihawk proved he stands at the top in that era. While in the era before, people probably weren't obsessed about being known as the WSS.
So Mihawk didn't have to dethrone the previous WSS because there was none. He became WSS by beating the strongest swordsmen of this era.

Due to the parallels Oda created between Pirate King and WSS(the WSS staying at the pirate king's side), i think Rayleigh fits the most in that description. His outfit in his prime was even similar to the one Mihawk is currently wearing, which might be Oda's way to indicate who the current WSS is
Technically Roger could fit too if he is really considered a swordsman by Oda, but i don't think he does, so yeah i think it was Rayleigh, and likely from this started the Shanks vs Mihawk rivalry with Shanks having Rayleigh as a role model

Roger until his execution undoubtedly. Then Rayleigh by default - the only possible contenders before Shanks and Rayleigh came to prominence would've been Linlin (if she is considered a SM) and Ochoku (if they were a swordsman - we don't know yet)

What about that John guy who was part of Xebec's crew? His Zombie was in TB, but didnt have his own shadow. He was a swordsman. These folks were all mentioned as legendary pirates so I'm sure John, Ochoku and Silver Axe could be massive powerhouses too
