If Kaku and Lucci got their Awakenings the same way Luffy did, in having near-death experiences, then the reason why Whitebeard, Big Mom and Kaido never awoken was because they were normally too powerful to be in a life or death situation, so the chance to awaken didn't happen for them.

But then, having a nice, long lava bath might just be the thing that actually does awaken the two of them.

The question is WHAT was Kaido's awakening, not whether he has it. Was it the fat nose form, flaming dragon, or the Magikarp -> Dragon itself.

All DF. Kaido never said it is only for Zoan fruits.

The only difference is that Zoan fruits have their own "will", yet it is not related on how to awaken it.

They are too powerful for a power up like that, Oda couldn't properly handle them without awakening, so he tought to limit their strength. The awakening is more of a power up for weak characters, like the supernovas, commanders, possibly Admirals.

What this man said. Weaker characters are more likely to hit their top natural ceiling sooner. When that happens the only other reasonable room for growth is devil fruit awakening. The likes of Law and Kidd and even mingo are perfect examples.
