Usually swordsmen respect/love their swords and they are something like partners for them. This is the reason why King is not a swordsman, if he really were he would not be asking questions from Zoro about risking his life for his swords. Further reinforced when King mocks Zoro about his sword Enma causing him problems. But at the same time King also said that he likes a good duel and started clashing with Zoro in a sword fight.
It is one of those instances where I am quite surprised that some fans have not used for their arguments. The stakes are too high now, even the WSS aspirer is willing to bite his opponents throat to ensure that he does not lose. Has Zoro lost his dream, his principles? There is no guarantee that his opponents on this journey are all going to be swordsmen, that they will respect the rules of 1v1 combat/duel. For Zoro to be the WSS, he has to ensure that he is stronger than every opponent that he may have to face. He is not afraid of, rather he wants to fight against the likes of Admirals and Yonkos too, Fujitora and Kaido. Him trying to fight Fujitora at DR end and Kaido before RT is different from before where he would let Luffy go for the top dog. Of course he does not want to interrupt Luffy fights like against Doffy but DR end is different where he wants to switch places with Luffy against Fuji after Fuji throws Luffy towards the GF. Similarly he did not relegate himself to anyone besides Kaido in Onigashima before RT. Only after learning that Luffy has found a way to fight Kaido at end of RT and seeing the situation on the Live Floor did he opt to fight King.
