Character Discussion Why Zoro still remains the Best Straw Hat

#61
Zoro checking Luffy in w7 about being too forgiving of Usopp and crying in front of the crew was really the best times of the manga. The strawhats actually "coming up" kind of sucked. Way more fun in the early days of the grandline

Zoro had some okay vice captain stuff recently, in Egghead he kind of got mad about luffy crying for Vegapunk and in Elbaf he figured out Luffy was up to something wrt Loki. It feels less serious though

Robin did it thinking he was innocent (kids 8). Nami did it with the intention of seduction.
In my country a 30 yo woman bathing completely naked with a 8 year old boy she just met would be considered extremely fucked up, at this age you already developed body awereness and I'm sure someone like Robin is smart enough to know that. Nami pushing Momo against her chest is tame in comparison even if her intent was reprehensible

These moments were so cool though, I loved Zoro as the hidden captain. The silent beast with his own identity, chasing his own dream of becoming the world’s strongest swordsman, yet choosing to sail under Luffy. It gave Zoro his own identity while telling us how special Luffy was for being able to have someone like Zoro willing to sail under him. Both of them benefitted from this.

When Thriller Bark happened, it didn’t feel out of place. Zoro sacrificing everything for Luffy was character development, it added depth, and it worked because Luffy was actually in immediate danger. It did not replace Zoro the character, it just added to him. I'm completely fine with Zoro in the protector role and as a Straw Hat.

The issue now isn’t that Zoro protects Luffy. It’s that his entire identity seems to orbit around Luffy in a way that undermines his own arc. There's a difference between choosing to protect someone as a sign of strength, and constantly being framed as existing only through them. The former makes him stand taller, the latter erases his character behind Luffy's. Oda was walking a thin line with Zoro and he failed.

It's like Zoro's entire arc is filtered through Luffy. His biggest battles, his power ups, his internal struggles, everything circles back to Luffy. It's like Luffy is on this guys mind 24/7 365, It's an identity loss. I don’t want to see Luffy’s face in Zoro’s mind during his own defining moments. I don’t want the climax of his battles hijacked by another man's image. When he awakens CoC, or when he beats the strongest opponent he's ever fought. Let him be a character, not a Luffy echo chamber, just like the rest of the strawhats. With Zoro, it stings more, because it dilutes what made him special, that hidden captain aura, the man who lowkey stood shoulder to shoulder with Luffy, not behind him. Zoro’s battles should be sacred, untouched by the usual Luffy worship. We get it, he respects his captain. Oda has beaten this into the ground until there’s nothing left, get that shit out of my face.
This is beyond well said. :Woro

Zoro used to be my favourite character. Guys like @The White Crane @Gauntlet @HellBlazer04 weren't created overnight. I have a firm belief that most One Piece readers start as Zoro fans. Shishio is trying to hold on to the memories. I bailed years ago.
As I've always said, zoro has always been my fav character and that will never change. But I can't simply ignore the shit Oda has done to my fav character ever since Post-TS.

HellBlazer doesn't seem to simply hate Zoro because of him being written poorly compared to his past self, it seems like it's more than that tbh
Trust me when I say this, I have never hated Zoro.
It's the way his writing has been neglected that angers me.

The dude was saying current Zoro gets parasite diffed by Doflamingo...
Bro how do u not understand something this simple?
Oda had Zoro get embarrassed by Lucci, Kaku and S-hawk. This is post Wano Zoro with AdCoC.
Do you genuinely think Oda gives zoro as much clout or preference as Doffy who oda made sure fought against top 2 SN while nerfed?

@ZenZu
A small correction to what you said
I wasn't on here during end of Wano, I came on this forum close the first CG chapter. At that time I was still a blind Zoro fan. Just imagine, I was stupid enough to have Zoro in Top 15
It's EH arc that changed me completely.

Got stalled for months while the general consensus thought Lucci would get one shotted Bellamy style.

Anyway, this bozo complains on Lucci part instead of Kaku or S-Hawk lol
Kaku never embarrassed EH Zoro, actually sleeping Zoro flexed on him Whitebeard style but as usual you choose to complain on Lucci 😂

Vergo, Doflamingo, Lucci in that order give him nightmares.

What are we talking about??
They think I'm scared of the characters listed because I don't wank them like they do
Even though I'm correct, but I guess scaling by both feats and portrayal isn’t valid anymore..
Anyway if you go off canon material with no personal biases, it's clear that:
Vergo is above certain Tobiroppo like Black Maria and Sasaki, but not people like WsW or maybe Ulti.
Doffy is YC2 level
And Lucci is YC2 or YC1 level (though given how easily Zoro shredded him I might put him at YC2)

Still ignorant.
Zoro used his strongest attack after Ashura and still didn't KO Lucci. So yeah, he got embarassed.
Proof it's his second strongest?

Vergo is YC2 level
Doffy is YC1.5 level
Lucci is inbetweener Admiral and YC1 / YC0.5 level

Correction:
Lucci is closer to Admiral than to the likes of Katakuri. He is YC0.3 level.

Personally, I'm not someone who cares for fanservice that much unless it's too excessive (which it definitely is at times with this series) but most of the time I don't care much, so I'd say Nami is the best strawhat post timeskip and the only one that's been a positive along with Franky maybe. It was Luffy at one point by a good amount but the G5 disaster and how it's only getting worse has made him a negative, that's how trash G5 is. Zoro is a non character at this point. I can't even call his post timeskip badly written BECAUSE THERE IS NO WRITING FOR HIM AT ALL. He's practically an NPC until the fight of the arc comes and he aurafarms with some cool moment like a cool cash cow of the franchise then goes back to being an NPC. It's a huge regression from how great he was pre-TS but he still hasn't become a negative yet because all he is, is an aurafarmer at this point.

So I would put Nami as the best SH (post timeskip, she is the only positive) followed by Zoro and Franky (neutral. Could make a case for Franky being higher though) followed by the rest who're ruined dogshit characters

Does this guy really look like NPC to you?
There is more aura in this one page than Luffy had in his entire pirate career.

This falls under his aurafarming moments. When Zoro takes over, he's the main man running the show but other than that he's barely a character.

I will say though, his moments with the crew in Elbaf were very natural and I was loving it but the focus turned to the HKs kidnapping the kids and boom just like he fades into the background yet again. He's made a return in the latest chapter though so hopefully he gets more panel time and continues the trend he's shown this arc instead of the trend he's showed the rest of Post-TS
