That argument factually went out of the window when Luffy failed to scratch Kaido's scales and when he failed to protect Zoro from Hakai. If you are like me and dont need it spelled out like that, you knew it the whole time. Zoro is the ultimate benchmark, not Luffy.

Underling is indeed supposed to protect the captain when the captain isnt capable of protecting the underling.

Yes wb had be protected by his crew in marineford because he was old and sick the second his illness came into play his crew started getting cheap shotted cause they were fighting with one eye on him.

Primebeard stands in front of his crew tall and protects them

The reason why Zoro should fight Shanks is simple - because he can.

Zoro is entusting Kaido to Luffy, he and all his crew know that his captain is the trump card, so not only Zoro but the rest of the crew would protect the trump card itself before its get played.

Zoro is the trump card in a battle against Kaido, because the captain is too weak to do what needs to be done.

Zoro vs Shanks is more believable than Zoro vs Kaido was. Remember, Zoro was supposedly an ant compared to G4 Luffy who got loldiffed by Kaido. The idea of him even seeing Kaido was laughable. It's not even post Wano but he's so strong Oda nerfs him before he uses Ashura on Kaido.

Shanks vs Zoro will be an amazing clash, assuming Blackbeard doesn't find him before Zoro does and/or Zoro is sidelined almost all of the Shanks arc cause of the mink drug
