Well, I generally think fandom is too quick to upscale (or downscale even) characters and that we should always wait for information to form strong opinions.
As for Marco, he didn't just briefly fight a top tier:
He actually blocked an attack aimed at other top tier and pushed the former one back
He hit Aokiji offguard
He briefly stopped bloodlusted Akainu.
And he had a longer clash against Big Mom (who generally ragdolls high tiers quickly, as she doesn't hold back that much) where he outright beat 2/3 Homies and had her running because she was expand too much effort in beating him.
That's vastly different than just briefly clashing with a top tier who is known for not trying too hard if he isn't motivated.
