Character Discussion Worst handled character in One Piece ?

#41
I had issues with One Piece since Marineford, but I just chose to ignore them or considered them too minor to spoil the story as a whole for me, but the lead up to the wedding cake and everything about it served as the first big red flag for me about where the series was headed.

LOda tries to portray Big Meme as menacing only to also make her a shortsighted idiot with mental problems, and when the closing act of the arc comes along, he reveal that she's slowly dying of hunger while in her stupid rage mode, so she's already defeating herself. Then they go and feed her a wedding cake which they were making a big deal about it being essential to the story, so either it actually serves a purpose, but it doesn't, it just fixes her up and accomplishes nothing. I was thinking either the cooks plan to make a cake so delicious that she suffers from takotsubo cardiomyopathy and dies from it, or that she loves it so much that she spares them for the time being, or that Bege realizes its stupid to let these idiots feed their enemy and goes ahead and poisons the cake anyway when they're not looking, or that she takes so long to stuff her face that it gives the Straw Hats enough time to escape or fight her commanders so Smoothie, Oven and Daifuku can get proper freaking fights, or at the very least that Big Mom is so stuffed she can't move. But no. While on the subject, what was even the point of bringing back Snack and Gelatto at the end (and all those other siblings) if they weren't going to do anything?

But even all of that would've been insult to Big Mom as a yonko. Its like LOda couldn't take her seriously just because she was an elderly wo-manchild despite all the directions he could've taken her in. Even the stomach acid thing from Fishman Island was just a dud.
It's clear that Oda had no idea on how to write and what to do of Big Mom. She's one of the characters who had the greatest potential in all of One Piece with her titanic physical abilities, very powerful haki, sonic scream and one of the most powerful and versatile and creative devil fruits in the manga and yet he used and treated her like shit.

And people are surprised I have zero faith left in Oda to write and treat properly his femal characters.

Kidd.....
Specifically supposed to be a major character with Law as the big three of SN, the latter does got an entire arc dedicated for him.
The amount of screentime is really limited too for a guy supposedly built to be relevant character.

Keeping aside the Screentime and underdeveloped character issues, and talking about battle prowess....
He's a confirmed user of all 3 haki, none of those had been implemented especially CoC, a guy whose characteristics personality and even fighting stypes represents that of a strong spirited/willed warrior, really no haki has been showcase.
For worse Oda made him a victim of a self insert CoC merchant
His DF is also supposed to be very powerful if the writer used his brain, but unfortunately he come up with the most childish ideas you could think of working out with a magnetic powers.
So from stage 1 foundation till the end, Kidd undoubtedly the worst handled character..
Oda just doesn't know what to do.

Smoothie, one of the 3 Sweet Commanders, did not get the same treatment as her brothers that are the other Commanders. She is wasted potential.

Faust, a Mink and Hawkins subordinate, was a no show in Wano. No explanation why. This could have given the Mink tribe more backstory and depth having to fight one of their own.

Urouge is the only Supernova that was not featured in an arc. Only bit parts being mentioned fighting a former Sweet Commander and seeing Kaido try to commit suicide in the New World. Hopefully he will get his shine in Elbaph and/or when Enel returns.

The Beast Pirates as a whole were handled terribly, other than the plot being so strongly against them that you never felt that they put a real threat to the alliance and that there were any tension or stake in Wano arc, they were the true underdogs of the arc; there's the fact that the history, motivations and dynamics between the members of the crew, including Kaido were so underdevelopped or neglected.

We didn't even get a proper flashback for Kaido to get a deeper look at his origins, his relations with Xebec and the other Rocks Pirates and with his own crewmates, even the Calamities save for King, and to justify why he came to Wano and wanted to kill himself and destroy the world; while he had only minimal interactions with King and Jack and had zero meaningful moment with Queen while getting overshadowed by Orochi in terms of screentime and being active for the first and second acts of Wano, with him doing nothing against the alliance outside of him crushing Luffy and letting Orochi be the mastermind of his crew. The relations between the Calamities, and also between the Flying Six were cruelly underdevelopped as well.

Enel 2.0 seems to be his best chance for coming back, but considering LOda's track record and how poorly he handled Kidd, Hawkins and Apoo (and maybe Drake), I wouldn't be surprised if all poor Urouge ever gets from LOda is watching Crydo commit suicide or becoming Enel's cronie. :pepehands:

You wanted proper character development for the Beast Pirates and a Kaido flashback? Too bad! Here's 40 chapters of everyone from Gold Roger to Whitebeard dicksucking Holy Prophet Oden! As an added bonus have these crap ton of awful SMILE designs, like Warden "Stuck-In-A-Hippo's-Mouth" or Mr. Commander "I'm-Literally-A-Cock's-Asshole"!

Oda wasted the BMP powerwise by handicaping them while he wasted the Beast Pirates characterwise.

And for the benefit of who ? Above all that retarded overwanked creator's pet and his naked dance.

Usopp/Robin/Chopper/Lanji/Smoker/Tashigi/Big Mom/Kaido to an extent/Kidd/Hawkins/Apoo/Smoothie/Ashura Doji and these are just names from the top off my head

Oda has fumbled so many important characters post timeskip it's crazy. With the amount of unnecessary new characters he's introduced since the TS with the exception of Punk Hazard to eat up the screentime which could have been given to these important characters, you'd expect some to be well written. Nah fuck that. Barely any of them characters are even midly interesting:gokulaugh:. Yet they eat up the screentimes of these actual important characters who then become extremely one dimensional and are given a shell of the importance they should have been getting. oda's writing post ts is so bad, I consider it a separate entity than pre ts OP which is up there with my favorite pieces of fiction.

The vegapunks

Them having spare bodies made one of the primary plot points of Egghead completely pointless

Chopper

Of all the strawhats he's had the least development in both terms of combat strength and character progression, Nami at least got Zeus and new climatacts, Usopp at least got Observation Haki and is being set up to be a legendary figure in the future Chopper hasn't developed one way or another since pre time skip

Ussop:
hasn't done shit in the past decade. Still hasn't got rid of his coward behaviour after 1100 chapters in the story.

Chopper:
Turned into mascot admitted by author himself. Shows no progress on his medical abilities. Law played the major part in curing kids at PH. Had no answer to curing Luffy when he was poisoned by fish on way to WCI.
Shows no concern for Wano citizens who suffer from Smile side effects.

Zoro:
Everything went downhill for him ever since "Nothing Happened". Lost his individual identity. His own dream which he shared with Kuina is not his top priority anymore. Had to beg his arch enemy to train him and that he wanted to do it for clown goofy. Only behaves as a lapdog currently in story. Oda had killed his character gradually starting from pre-ts and then created a grave for his character with Wano arc. Also the guy who is getting stronger to reach WSS, is still stuck at Commander Level fodder even after 1100 chapters.
Top 2 worst treated character along with Kidd

Sanji:
Self explanatory. Was decent till DR, everything went to shit for him after that.

Tashigi:
Swore that she would get stronger, yet still doesn't show any progress. Koby who started at a way lower level than her is now at a level that can oneshot any YC1. Also her dream is stupid and she's never getting close to achieving that.

Big Mom:
Again self explanatory. Vast difference in her character at WCI and at Wano.

Kidd:
The worst treated character in the story. Clown author wants to hype him up with statements but makes no effort to actually show his growth in strength and abilities. Never made him show a bit of haki even after giving him all 3 types. There's also no creativity in his usage of DF even tho he has theoretically one of the most OP and versatile ability. Kidd was someone who Oda had planned to include in the story even without the Supernova yet he hasn't gotten any decent exposure. His backstory was given in an sbs.

Smoker:
Suffers horribly due to existence of Fuji. Fujitora is everything that Smoker was supposed to be as a character in Post-TS.

Ace:
Suffered to progress the clown MC. Had one of the best potential but purposely given insecurity trait to lead him to his downfall. Also as if this wasn't enough to mock him, the clown author magically produced a character and gave him the same ability to show how great Ace would have been if he was still alive.

I'm sure there would be more characters, but these are some that just instantly came to mind.

Sanji hands down If I were to explain why, It’d probably be be a monthly essay

Oda has truly lost his edge with him
Sanji is a character that can only really shine in a Wano, Alabasta, Enies Lobby, Structured arc.Post Timeskip doesn’t have a lot of those.

I see Chopper in here like he didn't fight Queen, cure two plagues, block an attack from Big Mom during WCI, and create Mink steriods. Sanji like he didn't get an arc of development, and Robin/Brook like they don't get a good meal from time to time.

Bigger fuck ups have been Dragon, Ussopp, Smoker, and any character who lived a death scene not named Saul/Luffy/Sabo.

Dragons in the manga is near non-existent and the Revolutionaries sometimes feel like they opperate in their own sandbox. Its not that he's a bum, its not that he's useless, its not that he's never fighting personally, its simply that Oda refuses to give the reader more than a glance at him for so long. He spent several decades being little more than a cardboard cutout labeled revolutionary bad man.

Ussopp had a moment in Dressrosa but it wasn't till Egghead where he was pulling any real weight again. He doesn't feel like a brave warrior of the sea, and he's rarely allowed to shine. He feels like a joke, and his last major moment was telling the Samurai off for not fighting harder for their lives. Really hoping Elbaf has him struggle with this... I mean he's got a reputation and a dad to impress... but I just dont believe oda will do imposter syndrome with Ussopp. And thats really the only thing that could salvage that.

Smoker was set up to be a rival to Luffy, and then had a second opportunity to be an ally from the inside only to leave irellevant once haki was introduced. Feels like wasted effort now that Koby took his rival slot and Fujitora's a better man on the inside. I guess he has the numbskulls, Tashigi and the Giant Kids but I don't see a way for him to be anything more than a wet fart.

I don't count side characters, because there are way too many that neither needed to exist nor needed so much panel time.
