The polls are irrelevant. Jinbei was 110th in his first one and 35th in his second, he still joined. It’s not like Oda’s waiting to see how well Carrot and Yamato do and the favourite joins. Either he’s writing the story of these two joining the crews or he isn’t, a poll won’t change that
If that was what he was doing, it would be Law and Hancock as Strawhats anyway, as they’re far more popular and have been for a lot longer.
What the polls might do is determine how much screentime a character gets. He’ll look at Yamato’s placement and think “folk like what I’m doing here, I’ll keep this up.” Law’s huge role in the story is predominately down to how people adored him from his very first appearance.
What he’ll do with Carrot is a bit more uncertain because there’s such a discrepancy between how his primary market (Japan) and the rest of the world treat her. He might see this and think “maybe I should start giving her actual scenes”, he might continue doing exactly what he’s done throughout Wano with her- not a lot- because the Japanese don’t care all that much.
I suspect he’ll go for a slightly larger role, but nothing huge. Expand how much he shows her inevitable comeback against Perospero. Maybe tell the anime to dwell on the fight more than he did in the manga.

The fact that the SHP were always meant to be forcibly split up bums me out a bit...this story only succeeded through the early years because of all these random and disparate personalities growing close under Luffy’s command, and I think taking the spotlight off of them is where the series begins to go wrong even as the world building kicked into high gear. Sabaody and the subsequent split was all right, but then separating them into groups for Dressrosa and WCI still stings

Popularity polls are just an indicator of fans' preferences, so it doesn't matter in my opinion. They won't affect the narrative too heavily. That was always the mindset going in.
But I can guarantee going through previous pages that many of you would not be saying or acting like you are now had Yamato broke the top 10.

No, you're right that the poll won't affect the narrative that much. As far as the poll went? Yamato was around where I expected her to be, so it's already good she's there without an anime appearance nor existing merchandise. Yeah, it's no secret I'm high on Yamato and low on carrot, but I'm also not jerk enough to ruin the carrot fans happiness of her poll placement.
In fact it's one of those cool surprises knowing she has a huge following.

I’m 100% behind Yamato leaving Wano at the end of the arc.
Yamato on the roof will really be the decider on whether that’s as a guest, or as a Strawhat. Massive opportunity for both a flashback that goes deep into her relationship with her father and why Oden meant so much to her, and for strong Luffy/Yamato/Kaido interactions over Kaido restricting Yamato’s freedom.

Honestly, Carrot wasn't the only one who benefitted from the Top 20 Poll. She just benefited the most from it. Had this vote strictly been in Japan, Jinbe, Katakuri, Carrot, and Usopp wouldn't have broken top 20.
