It's not the first we see a non-straw hat defeating a commander, so I wouldn't be surprised if Marco defeats King.
Also, saying that Marco is not a major character is not totally correct. He is certainly more important than Killer, Hawkins, X-Drake, the scabbards, and even Kid. Don't forget he was WB's 1st division commander and the man who fought BB. He was highly anticipated and we knew he was coming to join the alliance and fight.
Let us not forget that Marco is actually fighting King right now, so you are talking about something that may happen while I'm talking about something that is already happening, that's the difference.

I’m definitely on the #Yamato4Nakama train and (as loathe as I am to admit it) I think Carrot is poised to join the crew as well. You’re right that nobody since Thriller Bark (Jinbe excluded) has gotten the invitation, but it’s hard to see why Oda’s building both up (one WAY more than the other) if not to bring them aboard somehow. At any rate, I don’t see any natural way for Gin to return, even if I know he eventually will 
He could turn the water to ice and chisel him out, podcast host and comedian Brendan Schaub...we’ve seen him manipulate it to his benefit in Long Ring Long Land as well as Marineford, so there’s precedent for it.

Maybe Gin will be there for the by Usopp Yaspp Shanks Luffy reunion

Sanji fans should only be happy now that Sanji vs Queen will happen. And yeah guys it will, for the ones still in doubt. The rooftop and general focus on the emperors as the main villains of the saga could understandably make some fans less excited about the commanders than what they could have been in prior arcs. But we have to remember that those are pretty damm powerful people, remember the struggle Luffy went through. For Sanji to straight up beat someone at level of Queen, it's a great achievement.
There is no need to try to project Sanji to something he isn't, especially because of the constant dynamic with Zoro.
Zoro has unfinished business with Kaido but he will first fight King. This arc has been set up for the emergence of the new pirates/generation, someone like Marco won't be the main actor in the defeat of a relevant individual like King.
That being said, Marco > King
