Mihawk Reigns Supreme
So the latest chapter had Oden seeing the outside world thanks to WB and then realising that he was merely a frog in a well. Even though Oden himself was strong by Wano standards, meeting WB opened up his eyes to a whole new realm of power. In the same way, I’m expecting Zoro to help inspire the samurai by showing them the power of the outside. Mihawk was the WB to Zoro’s Oden, and he was the one who introduced the concept of seeing the world to get stronger in the first place. It would be great to see a call back to Baratie showing how much Zoro has grown since then.
Oda seems to be making Oden and Zoro walk on similar paths, but Zoro's path is darker and more violent. Maybe to mirror Wano's status?

  • In your example with Mihawk/Zoro and WB/Oden, the Mihawk/Zoro interaction is painted with blood, while WB/Oden is a fun filled adventure
  • Tougen Shiratoki/Rengoku Onigiri - Paradise Waterfall, used in a time when the environment was beautiful and pristine and Wano was at peace, Purgatory Demon Cutter, used in a time when Wano has been ravaged by Kaido and Orochi's factories and the people of Wano are wallowing in misery
  • Oden and Toki's meeting is used for comedic relief, Zoro and Hiyori's sets up the tragedy of Yasu's death and ended with Zoro getting stabbed in the shoulder
  • Speaking of Yasu, in his flashback with Oden prior to his execution, Yasu is a young, healthy, powerful, and stern man telling the irresponsible and free spirited Oden that he needs to get his shit together; at Ebisu town, Yasu is an old, decrepit, weak, and merry man telling the stern and stoic Zoro to lighten up and smile, since smiling is a "power" that humans have.
  • Then there's the swords - both have a set of blades that correspond to light/dark, but Zoro's "light" sword was made by Kozaburo and his "dark" sword by Hitetsu, while Oden's "light" sword was made by Hitetsu and his "dark" by Kozaburo.
But Oden and Zoro have nothing in common :laughmoji:

Imo, it was used to show Oden as someone who's willing to throw away his ambitions for the sake of another. Something Zoro's done on 2 occasions in the story. When he offered himself as a sacrifice to Kuma and when he threw away his pride in order to be trained by Mihawk.

Great connections man, have to admit I didn’t think about the light/dark sword duo and the Yasu connection. I think Zoro in general has a much darker personality than is normal for the Straw Hats, the only other one being Robin (and we all know why that happened). Unlike Zoro, Oden doesn’t seem to have experienced any significant tragedies in his early life, and due to his status as the future daimyo, he was always allowed a lot of free reign. Zoro had no such pedigree and had to work his way up as a bounty hunter.

Zoro’s awakening as a swordsman was also a lot more brutal than Oden’s - his self confidence took a brutal beating from Mihawk and he learned BOAT under extreme stress after being cut to ribbons by Mr 1. Similarly Wano’s opening is going to be borne out of conflict and brutal struggle. In that sense Zoro and Momo are the perfect duo to open Wano up to the rest of the world.

Which is why ive said for a while, wano has shown to have 2 tyrants.
Kaido and orochi
Odens two swords will pave the way to liberate wano.
Oda has specifically made a kaido sword and an orochi sword.
Both swords will play a role in beating the respecitive tyrant.

I meant that the mood of the scene was a lot lighter than the one where Zoro and Hiyori met. Probably didn't word it well, but that's what I meant :catcry:

I’m just going to briefly push my Zoro x Hiyori agenda again and point out that when Toki and Oden met, Oden gave up Whitebeard’s challenge to save her. Similarly, Zoro paused his fight with Gyukimaru to save Hiyori and Toko, losing the chance to retrieve Shusui in the process. Zoro further abandoned chasing Gyukimaru to escort the girls to Yasu’s execution. Toki was a woman born in a distant land, a stranger in a different time. Zoro is an outsider who infiltrated Wano. Is this a coincidence? I think not :catpole:

It's amazing how much that encounter with Mihawk influenced Zoro. Prior to it, he's a lot more brutish and boastful, like his kid self. He believed he had all he needed in order to become #1. It wasn't until he was given that reality check from Mihawk he began to humble himself, slowly becoming more focused and serious. He recognized how weak he was in the grand scheme of things, and pushed himself to go above what he can be. Mihawk told him to see the world, and following that, Zoro started growing and developing values even Mihawk didn't expect him to.

Zoro vs Mihawk is fantastic. I probably wouldn't be half the Zoro fan I am currently without it.
