Idk bro, Kaido seems to gradually respects Luffy a bit more and a bit more, compared to act 1 where Kaido totally looked down on him, to now where he seemingly acknowledges Luffy already...
This might end up with Luffy gained Kaido's respect, then Luffy bullshittted it out with his speech, and then Kaido becoming ally in last minute, sacrificing himself and Yamao starts to view the father she hated so much in different light.

It wasn't damage control. His intentions were always to protect the crew, he didn't betray them then went to ask them for help, he tried to save them, failed and had to trust them

It's useless, they like a boring character that you can have in 99% of shonen mangas. They will never understand.

Another thing I that I totally got wrong was the idea that Hawkins/Apoo would switch sides. I though Oda would go the generic route and have them do so, but he actually stuck to his guns and made them antagonists. Leaves me more confident that Drake will finish off Apoo.

He never left him to die, he made a deal with big mom, when he saw that army heading towards luffy he went to her and asked her to release luffy and the crew

He was tricked, as soon as he found out he went to save luffy
