Don't see how showing their actual skills plays a factor. We found out what Nami was about almost immediately after introduction so she ain't a good example.

Chopper, Robin, Franky, Brook and Jinbe are better examples as you implied.

From Luffy Perseptive he did not know what Ussop and Chopper role would be until they official join. Ussop showcase some of his snipping skills while shooting a cannon ball against a rock. While nami had to inform Luffy about Chopper skill set.
We would not see Jimbei role until whole cake island and Robin role would not establish until she official join the crew.

There’s nothing Yamato has shown that the ship needs so it’s really just guessing. Only reason I’m saying this is because she’s going to go do something with Kaidos inventory of explosives.

Well I'm sure Yamato could have helped with guard duty quite a bit after Sanji was getting his ass kicked by Doflamingo and only averted a crisis because Law happened to be there.

Not entire character, but characters have offered to stay behind to help with the ship multiple times already, like Sanji, Usopp, and Franky guarding the ship while others walked around Sabaody until Camie got kidnapped.

Jinbei is really the best example here. There was no indication he was an exceptional helmsman until the end of whole cake island, hundereds of chapters after he was introduced and long after Luffy asked him to join the crew. No reason Yamato's skill can't be established later.

He was hinted at him at least being a helmsman back in his introductory arc when he helmed the ship leaving impel down.

Jinbei wasn't a helmsman when he was introduced, sure he may have took the Marines ship to Marineford but for his official capacity to the strawhats took awhile, have some patience ppl.

He helmed the ship leaving onigashima for a reason. He may not have been “a fantastic helmsman” like we saw in WCI but he was still hinted at having the potential for the role
