Yeah, it's nonsense to claim that Zoro protected himself from such a vast explosion by just coating his blade. Also, why would Zoro not be able to coat his body but his blades, which are an extention? Plus, Zoro coated his body with Haki on panel:

Marinford wasn't the first instance. Akainu showed the tendency to "root out evil by any means necessary," even if it requires killing civilians. The first scene with Akainu (the most important one) showed this.
If Akainu can avoid more fighting by using sneaky tactics and cheating in battle, then he will do so without remorse. That's his nature: he easley sacrifices civilians for greater good (as he thinks so), cheats in battle, and uses anything in his disposal to achieve absolute justice.
Keeping that in mind, it's easy to imagine how frustrated Akainu would cheat to take fleet Admiral's position, since in his mind Aokiji is not up to the task.
