Character Discussion What is the purpose of Shanks and RHPs in the story?

#26
Shanks being a hypetool for Blackbeard is the most predictable thing ever, meaning it isn't happening.

Much more likely that Oda flips the script and makes Blackbeard a hypetool for Shanks.
Honestly I just think they are separate antagonists for different points of the story.

BB being THE main antagonist for One Piece/PK, with Shanks being the plot twist at LT and taking the One Piece before Luffy can become PK.

Que Final War with Akainu/Im, then the series ending with Luffy and Shanks at an EoS location (imo, God Valley).

I guess its also possible BB and Shanks' roles are flipped, but I have a harder time believing Shiryu is Zoro's endgame than anything else lol

Recently it feels like Shanks is getting a lot less love from the fandom, people had no problem putting him as the strongest for the longest possible time and now he is sometimes not even in the Top 3. What is the point of Shanks and the RHPs in the story? Why has Oda only shown him very slightly from time to time? He has been involved in quite some stuff offscreen and onscreen.
Dying. :suresure:

Which fandom shows Shanks less love? You mean the clowns in this forum? That like 5-10 people circle jerking and patting each others back. Shanks just won a strongest poll in Japan beating freaking Roger.
:suresure:
That reminded me:
Check this out, TCB's twitter poll, 20k people voted:

Good thing I took SS, because they deleted the poll and other kind of posts about it.

Now do you guys see how Zolo fans alt accounts manipulated this poll ? :steef::suresure:

The same role Dumbledore, Gandalf, Obi wan Kenobi, master roshi , jiraya and many more play in their respective universes. The role of a mentor who dies(sometimes intentionally) inspiring his protegee.
Shanks fits that mold very well.

Basically the mentor figure is a strong character who is a steadfast ally of the protagonist. With them with the protagonist during the climatic struggle of the arc or the entire story, the situation might not feel that much dire. Things would always feel in control of the protagonist since he has a such a powerful ally alongside him. The villain might not feel that threatening even. To increase the stakes, the thrill and the suspense of the climatic struggle, the mentor needs to go. What better way to accomplish this than to have the villain himself off the mentor thus tying up two ends together while also giving even more emotional weight to the protagonist who is going to inadvertently defeat the villain either by force or otherwise .

tldr- shanks gonna hype up bb.

Hype tool and to balance the story. What I mean by balance the story is they are used to keep the story from going to far like in mf not letting the wbp just get slaughtered, like wano not letting the sh's and marines start a all out war over them taking out green bull.

No thats technically Rayleigh lol

Shanks had never mentored or trained Luffy, at all. In fact, Luffy has expressed taking down Shanks himself

Shanks is his spiritual mentor.
Rayleigh's thematic importance pales in comparision to shanks.
Shanks gave him his greatest lesson like every mentor gives their protegee. He learned directly from shanks that some fight are just not worth having. He applied it when Bellamy picked a fight with him. His pirate moral code is directly taken from Shanks.

Reyleigh has no such connection with luffy. Reyleigh is luffy's teacher in the same vein( though to a lesser extent) as hyogoro was. You don't consider hyogoro to be mentor thematic parallel to luffy now don't you ?

I know you are shanks fan and want him to amount to something more than just bb's bitch. But make peace with it. He is gonna end up hype tool

"Spiritual Mentor" lol. Nope, you literally dont get the character:suresure:

Dont make me pull up an example of Luffy stating he intends to defeat his "spiritual mentor". Or where his "spiritual mentor" talks to the enemy, or intends to attack Luffy's fleet, and now go after One Piece, which is in direct conflict with the MC. What other "mentor" has this role?

You cannot take these into account and say he's a Jiraiya or Dumbledore lol. That literally was Rayleighs role for 2 years, JUST like Jiraiya when he trained Naruto for 2 years. Jiraiya and Dumbledore didnt inspire the MC to become a Ninja or Wizard respectively, they taught them how to become a BETTER Ninja and Wizard. Shanks didnt do shit to advance Luffy's stance as a pirate, he inspired him to become one and when to pick a fight, thats it. Rayleigh on the otherhand literally is his mentor for years lmao

What if the man marked by flames is the pirate that Shanks was talking to the gorosei about?

also i think the island that the red hair pirates attended the wedding on is the same island where the new spider cafe was opened up on. these two locations are the only ones to have cactuses in the entirety of one piece.
edit: someone already said this somewhere else
