Isn't King's "character" is about being efficiently the best at combat in order to beat his opponents?

Why wouldn't he trains as traditional swordsman if that's the best fighting style?

At the peak, specializing in a particular fighting style is better than being average in all styles. Mihawk spent his life honing his swordskill. Obviously he won't just fully master Rokushiki on CP0's level on the side, as you can only fully commit to one thing or share resources on many.
