Luffy and Zoro weren't literally beat and imprisoned into submission in their childhood age!
---Luffy got beat by Ace and Sabo, his superiors. But then they picked him up and laughed with him, building him up, supporting each other.
---Luffy got a mentor during the 2 years, teaching to be stronger and supported him.

Sanji is last to awaken because he has more shit to deal with at the most delicate years of his life, and has had to figure everything about fighting out himself after Zeff.

What was the Monet hint? Because if you're going with what I think you're going with, I'll go with two for reaching as well.
1. Thriller Bark against Absalom when he talks about stolen dreams, Oda bothered to draw small arcs of black lines, just hints flowing off his shoulder and around him.

Lets assume, finding all blue is a dream worth getting CoC (which I doubt). Even then, he isnt serious about it =>

Zoro proved himself when he refused to back out even with mihawk's knife about to pierce his heart, since sanji called him crazy for doing that is why i believe his portrayal is different.
