If Shanks is a holy knight, him getting the Nika fruit is interesting. But why did he inspire Luffy? Why didn’t he go to Laugh tale with Roger? Why did he come to marine ford? (But that Sengoku scene of him accepting Shanks’s proposal looks reasonable).

One argument can be made that he didnt become one until after Roger died. He may have been crying because Roger told him something about his lineage, and this may be why he stops going after One Piece before Luffy was even born.

But as to why he's even doing this, especially if he's playing multiple roles to multiple people, is anyone's guess.
