Controversial Was Rocks planned?

#22
If Imu is the final villain then I think he was because I believe that Oda does have a general outline of the plot of the story it just took a couple of decades for him to get around to it

Neither was planned. Oda retcons just as much as other mangaka and authors, but he’s better than most at hiding it. Part of the reason he leaves so many open questions during every arc, even why he silhouettes so many characters, is to leave himself flexibility to fill the gaps however he chooses much later on.

Ie when Doffy said “try higher” than Sengoku back in 2010 (?), it didn’t mean Oda had imu planned. It was a way of him leaving himself room to add characters “higher” than Sengoku. (And at the time it looked like cp0 might have been those characters)

More than a decade later, he fleshed out the concept of imu. It fits, not because it was planned, but because the hole was so big that it could’ve been filled in a multitude of ways and still vaguely make sense.

This is also why he throws in “certain events” so often without giving any information about what they are, same as what’s happening in egghead as of 11/2024. A “certain shocking event” is about to occur. What it is going to be could be literally anything. Oda might know what it is already, or he might have no idea but will give us half a year of flashbacks to give himself time to figure it out.

It’s a brilliant technique honestly, he’s hacked the serialized story format.

Imu I can see the argument for. Rocks is as shoehorned as it gets. Even as of now there are irregularities with it.

I feel that Rocks was mainly used as a vehicle to combine Kaido & Big Mom for a simultaneous defeat. Even now, Oda may have not decided exactly how God Valley actually went down.

Imu was planned. Since MF by Doffy plus its kind of ez to not mention him since je's hidden and all. Idk about Rocks but I dont really see no issue with his place in the story honestly
I feel the same about Rocks

I do feel like we could have gotten hints about the crew(3 yonko all being on the same ship is something that should have been majorly hinted at before Levely Arc), but Rocks and his crew are a very interesting addition to OP, and it adds a lot of depth and mystery to an unexplored part of the timeline.

This tbh. Oda leaves a lot of leeways in multitude of elements. Sanji is a prominent example. From his background, as early as East Blue, to his powerlevel, which still is continued even until now.

Fans often praise Oda's for his planning, but often times he just fill in.

Nope. One Piece original plan was 5 year manga around 200 chapters (never would happen. At least 500 for what Oda had originally planned) where Luffy beat the 4 Emperors. Nothing about WG. Marines. Other pirates than them.

I believe Imu was planned, aside from Doffy's statements back in MF/Dressrosa, Akainu said this to the Gorosei directly:

The Gorosei are introduced as the "Highest Power in the WG" in the next panel while Akainu accuses them of taking orders from someone higher than them. This directly contradicts the official narrative of the WG back in chapter 793 while Imu was first shown in chapter 903 (almost 3 years between the two chapters).

So yeah, Imu was likely planned since MF. Not sure about Rocks though.

I would assume that Imu was planned one way or another from the beginning, due to him being such a central figure to the plot. The most likely had to be a head figure of the World Government and someone from the void century fits in better than some random guy who was crowned a century or two ago.

Imu as a concept probably exists for as long as the WG and the Gorosei do, so at least since Jaya.

Rocks i doubt was conceived before the timeskip unless he turns out to be super important to Blackbeard's story.

Obviously not.
The only things planned are some stuff from the start like until skypea maybe. Everything else is random addition.

Doffy only referred to gorosei not imu...obviously...why would imu care about it.

As if in the beginning??
Both aren't planned I'd say.
But Imu could be planned pretty early compared to Rocks.

The person that is the Teach equivalent during Rogers generation should be on Oda's mind for sometime, cos the story only gives us WB as only rival to Roger during old era who isn't even an actual BAD GUY, and Shiki was just a less relevant guy who's introduction is for movie ...........which keeps another room for another person that was actual Roger adversary to be revealed later on.

And Oda makes that guy to be ROCKS i supposed, without any pre-planned of his backstory which he will only think about later on.
His relationship and ties he has like him being the captain of three OG Yonko etc are only planned much later on.

I guess that Imu was somewhat to be expected, I mean the WG is the big bad evil organization and at the top of it you have 5 guys... Is Luffy going to fight all of them? It was and is more logical to have 1 man (woman) at the peak of the organization like it always happen. The only other possibility was to have BB overthrow the WG before he becomes the final villain but I guess that was discarded (at least with the gorosei format).

About Xebec... Probably at some point Oda decided that BB needed his predecessor too, just like Luffy, even because inherited will is a big theme in OP and just like there is "good" inherited will (Roger, Shanks, Luffy..) there is the "bad" ond (Xebec, BB). Now we have to see if actually Xebec role will be limited to that or if, most likely, he will get new links and relevance to the story (and not just the old legendary evil pirate). It somewhat also serves the purpose to wrap up the "hero of the marines" title of Garp, but I doubt it was planned that much time ago along with it.
