The reason why people wanted him to lose was not only because many people found Kat cool, but also because it logically would never make sense for Luffy to win without the story bending over backwards for such an outcome to come to fruition. If Oda simply written Kat to not be so overwhelming, or have Luffy be much more prepared to face Kat in some way, so many wouldn't be calling for Luffy's defeat.
The problem is just FS, which is an overwhelming power. You CANNOT hit your enemies and they will always hit you.
Other than that, even with awakening, Kat is not above Luffy. And as such when Luffy gets FS they are on even level.

The problem was also how Kat's passive stickiness on his Mochi rarely came into play throughout the fight. Even when Luffy got FS, Kat was still evading and weaving most of Snakeman's punches and was kicking Luffy's ass simultaneously. After all of that, Kat was the last to fall, and the 1st to stand, and only fell again to rest as Luffy gave an answer Kat approved of. Kat gave Luffy the W by disqualifying himself out of the fight.

You're being hyperbolic. It was a high diff battle at that point.

Katakuri didn't "disqualify" himself. He couldn't go on fighting and neither could Luffy, but the difference was Luffy could actually continue on. That's why he was the "winner" of that fight (or at least in Oda's mind).

The thing with Katakuri VS Luffy was that it shined a flashlight at everything wrong with Luffy VS Doflamingo and to a lesser extent, Luffy VS Cracker. You realize what atrocious writing it was to have a few Bellamy punches be what "nerfed" Luffy against Dolfamingo.
It's making me sure that katakuri is the second strongest yonko commender after ben Beckman. It's the commander that Luffy need to beat him first to be little closer from fighting a yonko. And still the only yonko commander who having the three haki special on one and awakening devil fruit and even now he show that his future sight is better than Luffy or kaido maybe shanks the only one who show the same level of future sight or little above
The stickiness of the Mochi isn't some cheat. It's a natural property of mochi like stretchiness is for Luffy's "rubber". It doesn't matter how "prideful" Kat is. He can't simply turn off a natural part of mochi.

Kat was still superior to Luffy in almost everyway at that point, and prior to that Kat was beating his ass across the Mirror World.

No. Kat only laid back down after he got a "satisfactory" answer from Luffy, as he was standing over Luffy's unconscious body for an unknown amount of time. Kat at this point wanted him to escape, so why would Kat put up any more resistance against Luffy?

Sure. That was pretty stupid, but did it really nerf him that much? Are there any panels giving the audience a clear indicator on how much it hindered Luffy in his fight versus Doffy. Also Doffy got nerfed as well thanks to Law's Gamma Knife, so it's not like Luffy was lowered to Doffy's level or something.
I don't see how Kat vs Luffy shines the problems of any other fights as it also has numerous problems, some of which are repeat offenders from previous fights.
I still love it, one of the most creative, epic and funniest fights. The ultimate "Mirror Match" for Luffy and his foil so far.
The memes that came from it were absolutely gold, Katakuris theme is extremely awesome and iconic and that one demonic, badass panel of him was phenomenal too. His rolling donut move and Kaido-esque spiked mochi move were awesome as fuck too.
I love that he copied Elephant Gun and did it better, plus it gave us Snakeman, Future Sight and Luffy facing down someone with a similar nature to protect others, almost like if he fought Whitebeard too, another "mighty titan or figurative giant" who stood tall and fell down even harder.
Luffy resting Katakuris hat on him and covering his face, never laughing at his goofy mouth, vowing he would return to defeat Big Mom when Katakuri asked him (RIP to that now) and the sort of brotherly/rivalry camradarie between them was excellent, along with Katakuri worrying about Brulee and trying to save her too. His relationship with her is great.
WCI had a lot of brilliant stuff in it along with plenty of bad too. Still my favourite arc post TS by far. With one of my favourite fights too. Although we are starved for proper, great and long fights post TS too.
I wouldn't say "way above," but the Doflamingo fight was terribly written.

It matters because Katakuri wants to hit Luffy because his strikes are precise not because he could simply glue him to the ground. He allowed for Luffy to go Snake-Man because he wanted to take on his strongest forms.

Katakuri was only superior when Luffy didn't have FS and wasn't using Snake-Man.

Correction, Katakuri wasn't standing over Luffy's body over immeasureable amount of time. By the time Luffy barely crawled out of that hole, Katakuri was still laying on the floor.
Kat at this point wanted him to escape, so why would Kat put up any more resistance against Luffy?
Katakuri being proud his worthy opponent escaped isn't a sign he let him win.

It's not about how much Bellamy nerfed Luffy, it's about Oda selling to reader's that hindered him in some significant way and even equated that (but no necessarily equate the degree) to Doflamingo's organs being all torn up.

Fans seem to argue that Luffy has no business beating Katakuri due to his performance against Doflamingo and Cracker. I argue the other way around. Luffy has no business fighting and winning against Cracker and Doflamingo the way he did.
That's why I said Post-Dressrosa as although Luffy needed outside help and a second helping of G4, he was rocking Doffy's shit when he was in G4, whereas in WCI he couldn't really get any footing in any of his fights unless he had outside help or he was allowed to by his opponent.

What I'm saying is that Kat's mochi is naturally sticky unless it's hardened; aka the blocky looking mochi. Every other mochi move should be sticky as that's the natural state of Kat's mochi. And even then Kat's not beyond using stickiness against Luffy even in the latest stage of the fight.
But even if hypothetically Kat was holding back his abilities for Luffy's sake, that further diminishes Luffy's victory as Luffy didn't truly defeat all 1 billion of Katakuri, but a nerfed version that Luffy barely overcame.
Katakuri was only superior when Luffy didn't have FS and wasn't using Snake-Man.
When Kat actually care to evade Luffy's hits, he did just that with little trouble. It was only because he went brain dead halfway through the fight and began to eat Luffy's knuckle sandwiches for little reason. What, is being evasive not honorable or something equally as idiotic?
Correction, Katakuri wasn't standing over Luffy's body over immeasureable amount of time. By the time Luffy barely crawled out of that hole, Katakuri was still laying on the floor.
Kat didn't even try to put up any resistance at all. He just asked Luffy a question. At that point Kat wasn't interested in fighting Luffy anymore.

He had no business fighting any of them. It's only thanks to outside help and PIS that Luffy was able to prevail in all of these fights, which is rather sad.
It's the second-best fight after Lucci vs Luffy for me. It's choreography is the best so far, and I only said it's the second best due to the utter lack of tension compared to Lucci vs Luffy. Otherwise, it tops the list easily.
Luffy vs Lucci, Doflamingo and Katakuri are the only relevant ones I remembered.
Simply because Enies Lobby is a memorable arc that got me hooked into the series, Doflamingo is a goat OP villain and Katakuri vrooom sound AdCoO haki is satisfying to listen to.
Yea …and in 3 years 2017 will be a “decade ago”. One Piece won’t be here much longer and neither will Oda we really got to reflect on this content he’s dishing out.
Luffy vs Katakuri is still one of his better written battles.
With that said, nothing has changed. Katakuri is still the weakest YC1. He gave Luffy a hard time because of Luffy's own shortcomings and limitation. Cracker gave Luffy a hard battle.
Luffy back then was only YC level while using G4 which has a 20 minute time limit and a 10 minute rest time. Luffy only used G4 3 times against Katakuri. He used boundman twice and snakeman once. That means majority of the battle Katakuri was facing base/G2/G3 Luffy. Katakuri failed to beat a veteran level Luffy.
Imagine if Ben, King, Marco or Shiryu failed to beat a veteran level after fighting them for hours. Certain fan base would call them veteran level.
