I actually like the fact that it makes Luffy less special. The "special boy" trope is one that can lead toward dangerous ideologies in our world. By including the fact that Bonney can become Joyboy/Joygirl through the situation it negates a bit the savior trope and it creates an horizontality.

Now, Joyboy is not only something special, is something special that is shared.
