They got one fraction of said plot armor during Onigashima where they should have been crushed, but once they went their own ways said plot armor left them, with what happened to them against Blackbeard and Shanks being what they should have gotten at Kaido and Big Mom's hands.

But of course the race was rigged from the start in Luffy's favor who always had the golden royal treatment compared to his fellow Supernovas, with it being obvious since Dressrosa that they were never going to be real competitors and rivals in the Pirate King race. The whole 11 Supernovas and Worst Generation things were only marketing, and largely due to editors' intervention.
