You're a fan?

Sorry, no modship in the world is worth pretending over Jinbore, he became so unlikeable and uninteresting at a certain point.

It's not even about my personal disliking; it'd be pretty crazy if the SH lose nothing whatsoever in their journey. And Oda might have been pulling off this whole charade with Jinbore (will he won't he and not fitting in) to soften the blow over his loss like he tends to with other characters. He's the perfect candidate.
I absolutely see your point about loss, but if it’s gonna have the same emotional impact as, say, Ace in Marineford, I’m not sure Jinbe is the best candidate in the crew mainly because everyone already expects him to kick it in the near future. Imagine how the fandom would react to Usopp, Chopper, or Brook being killed before achieving their goals...these characters we’ve invested so much in being denied their dream would be a much bigger narrative gut punch than the “Last In, First Out” philosophy as applied to the newest crewmate.

Moreover, his goal of uniting the races can theoretically be fulfilled by other characters, so the loss of his motivation wouldn’t be as significant as someone dying who wanted to become the strongest swordsman in the world or build a ship that could traverse the entire planet. A lot of the current Straw Hats have dreams that they alone can achieve, but Jinbe isn’t one of them.

The fandom would flip out if death happened to anyone else in the crew and it would have an emotional impact - precisely. Oda doesn't have the stomach to pull that off, he would never do it.

So that leaves... Jinbore OR no one dying.

But you’re saying that someone needs to die to exemplify the seriousness of Luffy’s quest...if that’s the case, Jinbe’s loss would be felt the least. I love the character, but why would Oda tease him joining the crew for a full real-time decade just to kill him off for effect six months later? What you said in the first response about softening the blow makes sense, but the whole point of the blow is for it to affect the fan base as heavily as possible, and I just don’t think Jinbe fits that criteria.

Yes, someone important needs to die, I honestly don't see One Piece ending on the note that Ace is the only person Luffy THE PIRATE KING lost. Of course Shanks is also on the "potentially dying" list, but he can't be the only one.

But softening the blow is exactly what he loves doing, that's why I think there is a fair shot of Jinbore dying. We already talked about this elsewhere, but it's Oda's trademark: Whitebeard and Roger were already dying so it was fine that they were killed, Ace isn't Luffy's only brother etc. And I understand this, it's hard to kill such loveable characters like our heroes :catcry:

Anyway, that's just my take on it obviously.

I appreciate your takes as always, and honestly, I’m finally starting to come around on Shanks being killed...maybe more than any other character, his death would affect Luffy to the same degree that Ace’s did, especially if it happens in front of him.

It really is difficult for any author to kill their darlings - that decision was the toughest one I wrestled with while writing my currently unpublished novel - but if Oda has to do it, and I think we both agree it has to happen for Luffy’s maturity, I just think there are better candidates than Jinbe.

Hate to tell you that guys but good Ole Jimbo isn't going to die because he is one of the main characters now, plot armor is the magic word 😏 besides I never understood the dislike of him or statements that he doesn't fit in the crew. (but again there is personal bias so I respect other peoples opinion about it)
For me he feels less forced than Carrot tbh

Pretty sure no one is going to die because that would entirety defeat the purpose of Luffy saying what he said after Ace died. He wont let any of them die. If anyone IS going to die its going to be st the EoS after dreams are accomplished

Some may say that it's because he will die. And it's true that this absence from covers and colored spreads is suspicious.
There have been 2 color spreads since Jinbe's return. The first didn't even have all of the strawhats, the 2nd didnt have any strawhats. Kind of an unfair gesture to make atm.

Nobody is dying guys, not in the main crew. Not until the story ends.

I don't want Jinbe to die, but I've always gotten the vibe that he will. He has too much bushido imagery around him. He's the perfect "humble servant who sacrifices himself for the boss." He was also playing that role with Fisher Tiger for a while, too.

Jinbe's LOYALTY has been his main theme; his faithfulness and belief in what's true to him. For him, dying for his captain wouldn't be a tragedy- a true bushido fighter will only accept a death in battle.

Like I said, I don't WANT any of that to happen, and I have no predictions on when it will, but Jinbe's got death flags for days. It doesn't make sense why he wouldn't be featured in the current line up, though. I guess we have to wait for the utage and see him formally join the crew?
