i think its sweet either way, whether public or private lol (that being said, only publicly propose if ur sure the person will say yes)

idk y everyone in this thread is saying its cringy and makes ppl uncomfortable lol
its not like the couple is having an intense makeout session or something

id only find it cringy if the proposal itself is done in a cringy way, doesnt matter if its public or private ig
