For all his impressive skills, Kata was reduced to another commander of Big Mom alongside Cracker. I dont think he can match the sheer scale of what a Warlord/Warlord candidate can do.

The clash at Banaro was between two people who could've become the PK in another timeline.

Katakuri was the strongest of Big Mom’s commanders and the one acknowledged as being their captain should she actually die. Probably a bit soon to downplay him when he could very well wind up being the captain of an ex Yonko crew at EOS.

Anyway I’m not downplaying Ace but Katakuri was crazy for a commander.
