That line was always so ambiguous that the regularly accepted theory of Luffy and Zoro simply noticing the other BB pirates on Jaya were part of his crew seemed reasonable to me. But them being beaten bloody might have heightened their sensitivity to shit around them like BB's odd bodied nature (CoO precursor even). Love the double meaning.
