In 1860s, it was the Republican north vs the Democratic south over slavery. What people dont know is that north simply opposed slavery itself, not racial inequality.
In the 1877-1960s, the Democratic Party passed Jim Crow law, with Republicans also voting for it.
In the 1960s, the Democratic Party passed the Civil Rights Act of 64, and Equal Voting Rights of 65. Republicans opposed this, and few democrats swapped sides. One of people who opposed these acts was future Republican president Ronald Reagan.
