Pre-New World OP, they are said to be rivals whose duels became legendary. And when Mihawk meets Shanks, Shanks wonders if he's come for another fight. You don't have these sorts of duels if you aren't on roughly the same level.

Well that was in the past. After all Mihawk has been introduced as WSS several times later, hence in our present story. Even Post Timeskip, additionally.

Fundamentally, all points toward the direction of believing that he is currently the strongest, then perhaps it wasn't the same in the past. But then again, him saying that Shanks was no more much of a match for his 1 arm condition is not an indicator to be dismissed. It wasn't stated just for some petty retaliation.

Mihawk let fodder Krieg off the hook. Didn't even fight back as Krieg opened fire at him. Postponing the match with a WB top commander and swordsman out of respect (since they clashed out of different motives) is nothing that downplays Mihawk.

Mihawk is called WSS in all sources. Yet his former rival, who is also a DFless swordsman, is somehow = or >? Then why doesn't Mihawk fight Shanks while going even as far as to train Zoro, to have an opponent he can fight with and lose? Mihawk would be ashamed to hold the WSS title if he couldn't even beat a one armed swordsman.

Mihawk = 2 armed Shanks. As they were rivals for a prolonged time, their growth rate is similar. But then Shanks sacrificed one arm. That sacrifice would have no meaning, if Shanks did not only decline in strength but actually got stronger.

Nothing. They are around the same and Mihawk edges him out slightly.
Being weaker than Mihawk doesnt make Shanks weak, there is barely any difference.

But when Shanks loses the swordfight then he turns to boxing and wins the fight overall.

Because Shanks is emperor and Mihawk is schibukai ?The title of the most powerful swordsman is only available to marines and allies. The title of strongest swordsman is not universal.

Guess I would of agreed had you been referring to a gap like Roger/Sickbeard, but I guess a gap like Roger/Primebeard, which is literally barely palpable, is something I would have noticed only with a Current 2 arms Shanks. ;P

Oda hasn't implied a winner, but I haven't seen Mihawk get respect from the Yonko or admirals yet
