General & Others At what point does "inspiration" become close to "ripping off"?

Name one other manga that continuously looks for ideas from other literature. I bolded continuously for a reason.
Not much. Which is why the manga industry is so poor in term of storytelling.

You need to understand that inspiration in storytelling actually IMPROVE the story not the invert.

Thank you for proving my point, Logiko. You call it "inspiration" and I call it "ripping off". We just see things differently.

Imagine implying that Vagabond is shit because it's a rip off of a real story.
Imagine implying that Slam Dunk is shit because it's a rip off of the Bulls and other NBA historical teams.
Imagine your brain on Naruto.
What a sad life certain "people" have.

I didn't claim any of that. Maybe take off your Goda glasses and actually read what I wrote instead of getting so defensive and making up your own arguments.

I think inspirations help bring attention to the original work from an audience that would otherwise never research it.

Idk where the exact line lies, but any comment section will tell you when ripoff has been achieved

Ideas are part of creativity. You see your surroundings and other work and your mind will come up with ideas that you can use.

Such trend is visible in every aspect of life.

Sports - upcoming generations often learn how to play by taking cues from their idols.

Movies - music - business models - they don't pop out of nowhere - we develops them by taking ideas from other piece of work.

I will give you an example - Einstein. His work is based on works of numerous scientists who came before him. He took inspiration and their ideas and mould in his own theory and came up with something so beautiful that we are still doing his homework

Inspiration sources are everywhere - it takes a hell of a creative mind to get idea from them. One major difference between people who succeed and who don't.

Oda definitely has taken countless inspirations but he hasn't copied them per se. He structured them as per his own story.

Nothing wrong with it. He can take multiple ideas and mould them according to his story and it will still be original because that moulding he did as per story is due to his own creativity.

If you want to see a rip off then go watch fairy tail.

It isn't about only taking a single idea. It is the fact, that he continues to take multiple ideas. Every arc, he needs to google other peoples work and add it into his. Almost everything relevant in One Piece was a work of someone else that he took from. Joy Boy was taken from Carribean story. G5 is Tom and Jerry. Wano ending was Plato's Atlantis. All these are major plot points of One Piece, where all of them were ideas that he took. At some point, your ideas can't continue to be from other's work.
It is a bunch of standalone ideas and concepts placed into a new setting spread out over 1000+ chapters. Big woop. I am going to take a wild guess and say that Caribbean Joyboy probably never fought 7 Warlords, 4 Emperors etc etc?

Nobody has copyright on mythology and Tom and Jerry doesn't have a monopoly on cartoon physics. None of this is "someone else's work".

Are we also going to criticise Oda for having Giants? Fairy like creatures in the Tontatta Dwarfs? Beast folk? Centaurs and a harpy? Where does this end?

Look, if you want to see how taking inspiration from various real life cultures and putting them together with fantasy elements ends up with a new setting, look at the setting of Warhammer Fantasy.

There isn't a whole lot of "pure" originality in Warhammer Fantasy. It doesn't rely on that. It takes a boatload of inspiration from the real world, blends some cultures together from different time periods, adds some fantasy races and the interactions between all these factions ends up creating a new world with a new history that entertains people.

Oda incorporates all those inspirations perfectly into his Manga to a point it becomes completely unique. Actually that's one of his greatest skills as a writer.

As for G5 nothing about it is really a copy. Oda represented Luffy's personality in the best way possible and is even willing to accept people declare that his Manga is going downhill because of that.
