Onigashima is a 10/10
Kaido vs the scabbards was amazing
997 was outstanding especially to the Zoro Chopper interaction
Roof Piece has been marvelous
Strawhats get fights is great too
Roof Piece has been utter trash.
Kaido vs the Scabbards was a glorified filler fight. Almost everybody I’ve seen didn’t care much about the scabbards at all and was just waiting to get back to Luffy and Zoro. This is because Oda did an utterly abysmal job at creating any emotional reason for readers to care about the scabbards at all, and none of them had a relationship with Oden that was explored or developed on panel.
We got a bunch of panels about the scabbards crying for Oden, but we never got to understand why they loved this guy so much except for how strong he was. His relationships with the scabbards was 100% unexplored. I guess Oda thinks if he draws characters crying, then readers will sympathize with them?
Kaido vs the scabbards was also retardedly predictable. I’ve been a member of the OP community for about 9 years now. Not as long as many others but a decent period of time. I can’t tell you the last time that I’ve seen the entire fan base, in unison, predict with 100% accuracy how a fight was going to go. “The scabbards kick the shit out of Kaido at first, reopen his old wound that Oden gave him, and then Kaido gets real and wins” <-this was the prediction of everyone and their mother because this was the most generic route possible and even 12 year olds could predict this nonsense. And hey, this is exactly what happened.
For reference, 50% of the fan base thought that Katakuri would actually defeat Luffy. The only thing Oda cares about as a writer is being unpredictable, and this scabbard fight was the most predictable fight he’s ever written.
As for Kaido and Big Mom vs the new generation:
The objective shittiest fight Oda has ever written, hands down.
1. The art is horrible. Half of the panels look like Oda hasn’t even finished drawing them, and their is visually no difference between attacks that were not working on Kaido back in 923, and attacks that are supposed to be hurting him right now. Oda draws Kaido screaming like a bitch to let us know he’s taking damage, which simultaneously decreases his charisma as a villain moment by moment. For comparison, I don’t think Doflamingo screamed even once when Luffy was punching him.
2. The dialogue is the shittiest Oda has ever written. This stems from the fact that, like I’ve mentioned in my first post here, that Wano has no story whatsoever. This has been the dialogue of this fight so far:
“Nani? They can injure me? How is this possible?”
“Lol, these brats!”
Mascot smile
“Punching attacks work on Kaido? Nani?”
“But muh durability”
“Lin Lin, I’m starting to have fun!”
Screams in terror after taking minor damage
“I will become the Pirate King!!”
^^If it sounds to you that I pulled the above from a shit tier fanfic, that is because this is easily the worst dialogue Oda has written in 25 years as a mangaka. I said this in the past, but One Punch Man fights have better dialogue than this, and the purpose of OPM dialogue is to make fun of how stupid Shonen dialogue can be. I can almost guarantee you’ll find better dialogue in every Fairy Tale fight. But like I said, this is just a symptom of the bigger problem:
3. The Rooftop fight is a manifestation of the fact that Wano has no story. In 2018, Oda gave a quote about how he thought his audience would be disappointed if Luffy defeated Kaido simply by virtue of his punch being so strong. If 2018 Oda could see himself now lmfao, about how the last 3 chapters of One Piece have just been characters fangasming about Luffy’s ability to hurt Kaido by punching him, about how Luffy’s entire character arc in Wano was just him learning stronger punches
off-panel, about how his big Chapter 1000 moment of One Piece was just Luffy punching Kaido....I wonder if 2018 Oda would check 2021 Oda into a mental asylum.
All of Wano has been terrible, but the Rooftop section of Wano has been the worst aspect of the worst arc in OP. Making it literally the worst thing Oda has done in 25 years of writing.
