The premise of this thread being that a host of other people like Zoro were close to Luffy to begin with such that any widening of the gap between them constitutes Luffy being overpowered is the issue to begin with.
I don’t know how many times it has to be spelled out for people within this fanbase to simply shut up and accept it: captains are on a whole different level. This has been pointed out an immeasurable amount of times from the beginning of the series, all the way back to the East blue, as Luffy was fighting enemies far superior than those the next in line was fighting. It was literally stated in Enies Lobby when Luffy fought someone that was twice as strong as the enemy Zoro fought, and Zoro himself acknowledged that it wasn’t something he’d be able to handle. It was spelled out again when they were gathered around Luffy in Thriller Bark and they all talked about how there were enemies that only Luffy could handle. It was pointed out when they were considering their training because they recognized that Luffy was carrying them.
It was directly shown when every single captain of a pirate crew had ever shown up along side his crew: the difference between Big Mom and her crew, Whitebeard and his crew, Kaido and his crew, Shanks and his crew, etc. It was shown when Oden got his ass whipped by Whitebeard and later Roger, and then watched as Whitebeard and Roger split the sky casually in a spar. It is shown when Zoro used his strongest attack and scarred Kaido, and Kaido turned his back on him while he proceeded to fight someone he deemed worth his time while Zoro was relegated to fighting and struggling against someone Kaido would murder with ease (while Law and Kid, captains and Luffy’s rivals, are also fighting someone far above the opponent Zoro fought). It is shown while Luffy is fighting Kaido in base, while Zoro gets overwhelmed by a subordinate.
This whole “Luffy is overpowered,” discussion is a lie. This is how it’s always been. Luffy has always been far superior to anyone in his crew, and as the competition has gotten tougher, that gap has widened. It’s a lie to say that Luffy is overpowered, made up by people who cling to x character being close to Luffy because the only thing they value is strength. It’s a lie to say it’s Oda’s fault or the editors fault, because they’ve been honest about it from the beginning. The only one at fault are the fanboys and the people that took it any other way to begin with.
