Character Discussion EoS Zoro will NOT surpass or be comparable to Ryuma

#61
Zoro’s dream is not to surpass the old generation… It’s to be the current strongest swordsman in the world

all the strawhats will achieve their dreams… AND ZORO’S DREAM IS TO BE WSS… which is exactly what he’ll do
The SHs have the ultimate dreams. They will become the best of their role.
Luffy will be the ultimate PK, better than any before.
Nami will become the best navigator.
Chopper the best doctor.
Etc.
Zoro will become the WSS by defeating the current best swordsman, but he'll also surpass any swordwman who's ever lived.
That's why their dreams are impossible. After them, nobody will ever be able to do better.

he'll also surpass any swordwman who's ever lived.
Not only is this not Zoro’s dream so he doesn’t have to do it, it’s not set up how he would even do it

like the reason we know Zoro will become WSS is because Mihawk already exists for Zoro to beat

who will Zoro beat to become The greatest swordsman who ever lived?

The big feat Ryuma is known for is holding off the entire WG from invading Wano… Will Zoro do this too? Actually Zoro has to surpass Ryuma so Zoro has to do something EVEN MORE impressive than holding off the entire WG… see what I mean?

you think Zoro will go from beating Mihawk to being able to fight off all 5 Gorosei and 9 holy knights himself?
Cool story. Lucci is also the hero which is why he has better feats than subordinate Zoro. And trust me bro I like Zoro...(but).
what are you talking about, Lucci?

Wrong, that's why the manga said Joyboy, not Luffy, beating Kaido was her feat that rival Ryuma's feat.

Believing Zoro won't become the next Ryuma because he's a subordinate is foolish and irrelevant because Ryuma was not the leader of Wano.

Ryuma forging a black blade was one of his legendary feats. They considered his sword a national treasure. Oden's daughter didn't hesitate to give up her's heritage, sword, to get Ryuma's sword back. He was the only one from Wano to forge a black blade. Not even Oden could forget a black blade.

Joyboy or Luffy will need Ryuma or Zoro to beat Imu. They have lost every single time even with an army because Imu was too powerful.

Oda told us she want Zoro to be the greatest swordsman ever.

The big deal is WHO HE SAVED THE COUNTRY FROM… The WG being repelled by ONE MAN is a feat on Joyboy tier

also it’s Luffy that’s going to save the world, not Zoro… And remember Ryuma did this SINGLEHANDEDLY, by himself, no crew, no subordinates
Ahh yes, I thought we're talking about legacy which is why I initially disagree.

But if we're talking about feat, yes I'd definitely agree with that because that is simply objectively true.

Since even if hypothetically EOS Zoro would be stronger than Ryuma, he will never be in the same position as Ryuma's. So Zoro will never have a feat such as repelling the WG singlehandedly or similar to the AdvCOC Knot of Joyboy.

Luffy won't beat the WG singlehandedly either.

Beating Mihawk will be a greater feat than that knot feat. Shanks haki what's compared to Joyboy haki and Mihawk is much stronger than Shanks.

Checked the raws and you're right in a literal sense but again, it's shonen so it's heavily implied he means the strongest ever.:sanmoji:

Japanese Text (Raw):
  • 約束しろよ!!!
    (Yakusoku shiro yo!!!)
  • いつか必ずおれかお前が世界一の剣豪になるんだ!!
(Itsuka kanarazu ore ka omae ga sekai ichi no kenkō ni narun da!!)
English Translation:
  • "Promise me!!!"
  • "One day, either you or I will become the greatest swordsman in the world!!"
✅ Meaning of "世界一の剣豪" ("sekai ichi no kenkō"):
The phrase "世界一の剣豪" directly translates to "the world's greatest swordsman" or "number one swordsman in the world."
It does not explicitly specify "of all time" (like 永遠 or 史上最強), but in the context of shonen manga like One Piece, especially given Zoro’s ambition, it implies the strongest ever known, not just of the current era. However, linguistically, it's literally just "in the world"—which generally refers to the current living world, unless context (like comparing with historical figures) implies otherwise.
Mihawk is not his dream. His dream is becoming the WSS. If someone else killed Mihawk for the title then he'd target the next title holder. Mihawk is simply the current title holder and hence Zoro wants to beat him. Also his dream is literally to be the greatest swordsman ever
And the intention is even more clear when you see that Oda's inspiration to give Zoro 3 swords was Musashi Miyamoto. Oda views Musashi as the greatest swordsman EVER and thus, he gave Zoro 3 swords with the intention to make Zoro even greater than "the greatest swordsman EVER". So it's quite clear that Oda wants him to be the strongest ever

Nobody knows Ryuma outside of Wano. Where as everbody knows who Joyboy is. One is a legend for protecting Wano from a dragon and outsiders. The other is renowned all over the world for fighting the WG.

Mihawk has already admitted inferiority to WB and Roger.

Ryuma is weaker than Mihawk
Could well be. We know Ryuma had a scar on his cheek and lost an eye in addition to having a black blade, the relatively weak Shusui.

Mihawk is weird. No scars. No one has an official W over him, closest being Shanks who drew. Yet also has a black blade. And not any blade, the strongest in the OP verse Yoru. + His CoO that is hyped to the moon.

Could be that Ryuma had to fight his way to the top with Zenkai boosts like Zoro while Mihawk naturally is the most talented of all time.
