Character Discussion Fuck Kaido as a character

Kaido will fight blackbeard when his crew invades wano for pluton.

Teach will place himself as de facto final villain after beating shanks, kaido and linlin.

Atleast he didnt show him getting one shoted by a weak attack like some certain admiral
Weak attack? That was the strongest pirate with strongest conqueror haki, its normal for people to shit their pants and run, that's exactly what happened to kaido in marineford.

He's a trash character with a trash backstory and a trash personality.

The only thing good about him is his design and fighting style.

The rest can go to the garbage bin.

Oda did him supremely dirty with that piece of shit flashback he has gotten.

I had immense expectations for his character but I was left majorly disappointed, heck he wasnt even the main character of his own arc we barely fucking saw him until Onigashima.

Fuck Kaido and fuck Oda.
Good one

We should burn every single Film Red dvd/Blu-ray
That shit ruined my view on Luffy. Not the film haven't watched it but the fillers trying to hype the film. Fucking disgusting. I even thought uta bitch was shanks real daughter and I was wondering where did shanks spread his nuts.....who did he nut in? Uta is the cringiest character in one piece

Bullshit.
No flashbacks so far tops either Hiluluk or Bellemere.
Just because Kuma endured a lot of pointless suffering does not make his fb a masterpiece, especially when Kuma's personality can be reduced to "don't be scared, Nika will save us all one day"
:gokulaugh:lol cool down i never said he had the best flashback, but he sure got whole lots of chapters for his suffering.

I agree with every word, dot, comma and space here.

Characters like him shouldn't have a fb and it still be ok...
The main role of Kaido in these story is strength and power.
He's legit hardcore villain that pretty much have no or doesn't need justification on how he's gone bad.....
He's just there in the story to be the bad guy........he got the strength and power inexchange for the lack of so-called character at least.
We just want a villain to have a deep emotional backstory on why they become this and that.
:kayneshrug:
You see, just like how the Joker movie was adorned by many ppl.....
I don't personally care about it.
Character like BB are already interesting to me even without backstory, they do not need justification, they're just evil and enjoy chaos, that's just about it.
And i hope Oda doesn't do any emotional well justified backstory for him.....

@Fujishiro Gaimou from Kingdom is what Kaido could‘ve been, Hara really only needed a couple chapters to explain Gaimou‘s philosophy as a warrior who relies on brute force, and a general who sees the battlefield as a place to satisfy one’s primal desires

Oda just doesn’t care lol
I love when Kaido fans act like the amount of piss poor writing Oda tortured fans with for 4 years is fine because “Kaido was never supposed to be deep” lol

Hara spent 20 chapters on Gaimou and already wrote a far more complex and functioning character than Oda did in 300 chapters of Wano. You don’t need 4 years to write a deep character, Gaimou was deep in 20 chapters and didn’t even need a backstory to be deep.

Hell Oda has written great villains with no backstory. Crocodile is an example of that. And Crocodile wasn’t deep or complex, he was just a functioning villain with an identifiable character and an understandable motive. Not even close to what we got with Kaido lol. You want the longest arc to have an actual villain? “Stop asking questions, you dumb child”-brilliant character writing according to TAC

I said from the start that no backstory could save Kaido and I’m almost grateful that Oda didn’t even try. Kaido’s backstory was like Oda’s way of saying “fuck it, here’s a backstory so my fans will realize that I cannot possibly save this character” lol.

People claiming Kaido doesn't need a backstory because he isn't a "complex character" are just coping about how garbage Kaido is. Lacking character complexity is not a problem. Few OP antagonists are complex, sympathetic characters. They are generally unrepentant, evil arse holes. Lol.
Aye, I have been seeing an argument in this thread about how "Kaido is a might makes right character so he doesn't need to be a complex character".

About that...

First off, there is no solid rule of writing that decrees that a "might makes right" character cannot be a complex individual.

Secondly and far more importantly, I have not seen one person criticise Kaido for not being complex. Kaido isn't criticised due to a lack of character complexity, the main criticism is that he is bland, boring and underwhelming.

How many popular One Piece antagonists are actually praised for being complex characters? The only one I can think of is Doflamingo.

Alabasta Saga's main antagonist in Crocodile wasn't complex. The man was just classic, power hungry, manipulative villain energy played straight.

Skypiea Saga's main antagonist in Enel wasn't complex. The bloke was an egotistical, narcissistic, megalomaniac high on a self-deluded God trip.

Water 7 Saga's main antagonist in Rob Lucci wasn't complex. The guy was a sadistic, bloodthirsty, straight laced assassin that followed orders to the letter.

None of these guys were complex characters when they were Saga/Arc antagonists and none of them had any sympathetic character traits. They were all unashamedly villainous to the core.

All of these characters are far more popular than Kaido and it sure as hell isn't due to their "complexity" because they haven't got any.
So a lack of "complexity" is not a reason why Kaido sucks.

Back to the backstory argument. Funny thing is, someone very important thought that Kaido did in fact need a backstory. That someone is Oda cause he went and gave him one. Problem is, said backstory was mediocre, especially for an endgame antagonist that should have represented the pinnacle of piracy and was hyped up by the author for over a decade just to get a backstory that gets shat on by Senor Pink's backstory, a backstory for a character that isn't even amongst the higher ranking subordinates of a Warlord. Kaido was treated like he was Baby 5 in terms of backstory relevance.

So Oda did far worse than give Kaido no backstory, he gave him a mediocre backstory. Lol.

Kaido is strength personified and a direct example that being Pirate King isnt just about being the strongest on the seas. Bro was born with that dog in him, and grew up chasing that smoke.

He did not jump off that Sky Island genuinely believing it had a shot to kill him, he thought that maybe if he nerfed himself the shitters below could give him a good fight. He drinks so much, because, like Zoro, he likes drinking! Even has a whole drunk master series of hybrid forms.

He's a brutal dragon emperor straight out of eastern legends, and for the most part their strength is their defining feature.

I like Kaido, and I can understand people wanting a more involved backstory like Doflamingos. But tbh I feel Kaido actually being some sad boy or 9th level intellect ruins his character on a fundamental level. His lack of sympathy for the weak makes less sense, and his hobby of collecting powerful enemies for his crew becomes a logistical blunder, rather than an intentional feature of his crew.

Anyways, all Kaido's narratively interesting stuff happened with ROCKs so we still have more to learn about Kaido's days as a cabin boy. Not to mention having that in Wano further bloats the arc.

I agree, if Kaido had a Doflamingo-like backstory, many people would think of that when they think of Kaido instead of his amazing power.
