I don't think Luffy needs a gear 5 but if he has one I hope Awakening is his gear 5.

Luffy and Zoro's "power boost" for Wano is about improving their CoA haki.

Zoro learned how to produce more powerful attacks by using more haki and less physical strength. With enma Zoro can improve that skill much faster.

Zoro cut a cliff using only the physical strength needed to cut a tree thanks to his overwhelming and powerful haki/ryuo

Luffy learned flowing haki and internal haki. He
made a tree explode from within without physically touching it thanks to his powerful internal haki attack.

Right now, they're still working to master their powers and it's making things more difficult.

Zoro still hasn't fully master enma and until he won't have full control over his haki and it's going to drain his haki faster.

Luffy is using internal haki with his G4 which drains him too quickly and puts too much strain on his body.

Once they master their powers they will be much stronger. So instead of Luffy gaining G5 I hope he uses G2 more and put all his gift for power and strength into his internal haki G2 attacks. When Luffy was hitting Kaido with his kong gatling I feel like 80% of the AP from from his punch and only 20% came from his internal haki.

Awakening is not needed imo...

better control over G4 as in the ability to last longer as well as the proficiency to switch between forms as I believe tank man would be a great asset to take on stronger attacks from Kaido. Adding with adv CoA possibly getting stronger and most importantly Luffy is not alone in this fight the other members of worst gen are going to continue helping Luffy till Kaido is defeated.

Based on the way Oda is going with this I'd say that Luffy will get the awakening in the fight against Blackbeard. Before Wano, we (including myself) thought that Luffy would be able to solve the gear 4th time limit with better/advanced haki. But in Wano arc we saw that advanced haki did not affect Luffy's gear 4th at all. So by definition there has to be another way of solving the gear 4th drawbacks, and I would assume that the DF awakening is the answer.

I don't think that Oda wants Luffy to get rid off the gear 4th drawbacks right now, in Wano arc, against Kaido. As I've already mentioned above, awakening is reserved for the fight against Blackbeard and I also think (based on the flow of the story) that the DF awakening itself is the key that can solve the gear 4th drawbacks. So, if awakening and gear 4th drawbacks are reserved for the fight against Blackbeard, then by definition, the only option left here is the gear 5th–especially considering the fact that Oda himself has been teasing it recently, both in the story and SBS.
Why would awakening be reserved for the DF ability neutralizer in Blackbeard? That’s the one guy you can’t overly on a fruit against. I think Conqueror’s Haki (assuming there’s things beyond fodder control) and haki overall will actually play the more vital vs Blackbeard. Awakening vs Kaido would keep Luffy’s head above water in so far as not passing out every 20 mins and it would give him the firepower he needs to induce significant damage.

optimizing G4 and new ability like awakening or G5 as a finisher with g2 and g3 stacking.....Luffy G4 is improved though there is still that time limit but atleast he can switch off/on as he pleases unlike before....and the only reason Oda has shown haki drain explicitly is to tell either timelimit has come down (since there was no indication that Luffy has rested for 10 minutes in the off paneled battle) or he is going to show on screen regarding the improvement of G4...and I think he will combing boundman/snakeman/tankman into one and can switch to the form without wasting much time unlike before...

there is one more thing that is bothering me that his conversation with Rayleigh.....he realized that G4 won't work on everyone and to that Rayleigh replied something which was cutoff....I think Oda is going to bring that back (if it is just random throwaway lines, then that is another story)....

Another guess is that he has king variant of g4........

Though Oda looks like he is joking in SBS, it could as well be the hint to G5.....

Honestly, I think awakening is the key to unlimited G4. If Luffy can control every aspect of his rubber body at will, without the need to pump blood, or blow air into his bones and muscle, then he'll be able to incorporate G2 into G3/G4, and switch between G3/G4/and G4 Variants at will.

Gear 4 is increasing the stiffness of his recoil through Haki... How does awakening play in at all there?

Paramecia awakening has to do with the environment being affected by your DF.

Luffy doesn't function like other Paramecia's. He doesn't produce rubber, he is just in a constant state of being. If he can't currently control his own Rubber body at will, then how is awakening supposed to allow him to do that to the environment but not himself?

What does controlling rubber "at will" even mean? It sounds you're making stuff up.
He can't control his rubber at will. If he needs G3, he needs to blow air into his bones. If he needs G4, he needs to blow air into his muscles. If he could control his rubber at will, it eliminates those steps, and allows for much quicker transitions between forms and move sets. Makes much more sense than a person who can't produce their substance to magically be able to turn the ground into rubber, and control it. Oda needs to go for cohesiveness here, and what you think Luffy's awakening should be is exactly not that.

Him blowing air into his arm was never a bottleneck or a hinderance of any kind. These are trivial things with almost 0 effect on battle.

Paramecia Awakening = DF affecting environment. Oda foreshadowed it with Doflamingo/Katakuri. That's what Luffy will do too.
