Why would awakening be reserved for the DF ability neutralizer in Blackbeard? That’s the one guy you can’t overly on a fruit against. I think Conqueror’s Haki (assuming there’s things beyond fodder control) and haki overall will actually play the more vital vs Blackbeard. Awakening vs Kaido would keep Luffy’s head above water in so far as not passing out every 20 mins and it would give him the firepower he needs to induce significant damage.
Blackbeard has Gura Gura that can create earth quakes. Luffy on the other hand, the Gomu Gomu which is rubber, and rubber is famous for its ability to absorb vibrations.
I recall that in Enies Lobby Luffy had yet to master G2 and yet he came up with G3 at the same time, so it would not be too illogical if he came up with G5 despite the current situation and regardless no firm proof he didn't even master G4, but I doubt this is the limit.
Gears are useless... More physical power achieves nothing...
The issue is Luffy's lethality, he cannot match a sharp weapon.
His best lethality - ID, ended up lame. Just like I said it would.
He is gonna keep tickling Kaido until Zoro removes his head.
From my view,
The drawback was because Luffy used aCoA. If he didnt, i think he could stay in G4 longer : right now luffy could use G4 againts Katakuri without run away / running out of G4 time / using Brulee etc.
Oda still made Luffy had drawback was to make Law say about time limit and made Luffy-Law-Kid equality. It was implied that Luffy was 1 step higher than both capt.
I think Luffy in G4 is enough but with improved all Haki.
# 1st : Katakuri version
--> he'll try to copy katakuri CoO to a state of so much calm.. Even though it failed, Kaido will think whether Luffy is up. So aCoO upgraded. This means with aCoO + just strong CoA, Luffy=Katakuri YC1
#2nd : aCoA plot Upgraded
--> on WCI, he remember future sight and try on katakuri several time till kata said that Luffy approaching kata aCoO level, and we know Luffys aCoO is not the same as Kata, its just near.
--> on Wano, he trained aCoA with Hyou-jichan. He'll try that until his aCoA better. It mean that approaching the end of wano / Kaidou lose, luffy can use G4 without time limit while he doesnt use aCoA, as his aCoA is converted to lower level=CoA to make G4 form stable. This means With aCoA + just strong CoO, Luffy = Oden
#3rd, Dai Kaizoku plot in Kaidos eyes
--> we might get Shanks name gets mentioned. So Luffy might grow in CoC to roughly 75% of Shanks (roughly in Fishman Island, Luffy 50.000; Shanks could at least 100.000). This can help 'Luffy meet with Shanks' context story. Of course we dont speak about aCoC.
#Last...
--> Luffy will accumulate aCoA + aCoO + CoC + G4 (King King King kong gun could work : like vs Douglas Bullet, /or anything)...
So that is still in G4.
No awakening, no another gear...
G4 is stronger than non awakened Kaido, the time limit is the only problem, this can be overcome if Luffy is an 1vs1 scenario without BM's cheap attacks - Kaido can handle the cheap "attacks" from the other SNs who can't properly damage him a lot better than Luffy. Luffy still hasn't used a KING move against Kaido, Georex Bazooka with INTERNAL DESTRUCTION would be enough(I think he has only been using barrier to damage him, the blood doesn't confirm internal destruction as it has been confirmed barrier is all that is needed to damage him, internal destruction will help against zoan regen)
G4 gattling happened over long enough time for all the SNs to recover from being lightninged and then carried on after that, Kaido was put down for several pages, far longer than a few seconds and Kaido took decent damage from that assault.
Luffy was sneak attacked while prone by BM after this, if it was 1vs1 he could have got up and rocketed away- he still has g2 speed in hakiless mode so his straight line escape speed should be fine, remember last arc's haki drained Luffy can instantly no diff Brulee, carry her on his back and escape Perospero and others chasing him.
Now if Kaido awakens, which I believe he will, the game changes and Luffy needs to counter with his own awakening or other trump card.
Gears are useless... More physical power achieves nothing...

I think that his gears were pretty useful when he had to match Lucci but even at the time he wasn't too lethal except for his G3 due the sheer strenght it would confer to him. In general I agree that a sharp blade confers a superior level of lethality no matter what's the intrinsic force.
Because the whole physical force would be wasted. Why use only haki when you can use haki and physical blows?
If he was using only haki his hits would be even weaker since the whole physical part would be excluded.
The first time Luffy tried to use G4 against Katakuri, he stopped it mid transformation, while Luffy was blowing into his arm.
If Luffy ever wanted to switch between forms of G4, he would first have to deflate the form he is in, and then start the process all over to go into the next form. That's a huge time waster, that can easily be resolved if Luffy was able to manipulate his rubber at will. It also eliminates the necessity of constantly using Haki to maintain the shapes of his G4, forms. If he can expand his entire body to the shape of boundman, and then apply Haki to only the parts that are needed at the time, then he's no longer burning through Haki at a rapid pace, and could maintain the form indefinitely.
Again, Doflamingo and Katakuri's Devil Fruits fundamentally function differently than Luffy's devil fruit. They can produce and manipulate their substances at will. It doesn't make sense for Luffy's awakening to function like theirs, when he can't produce rubber.
Wano: Alternating between Different Gear 4 forms like Deoxys. This is possibly done through Ryuo Mastery, controlling his flow and output better (as he did not have time to control it better in Udon). Luffy could also go through another big Haki Bloom right here in this Yonko Fight (and I don't think it's too farfetched to say).
I see Luffy exiting Wano Kuni as a fully fledged Emperor with Wano under his control, the Grand Fleet, and Fishman Island as his specific territories. So Oda will make this Power Boost imminent. [Mihawk became WSS at 19, so this is no big deal].
Elbaf: I see Gear 5, incorporating CoC into his haki and making his casual moves as devastating as possible. Something comparable to Ikoku and Thunder Bagua as base attacks.
Raftel: Fighting against Blackbeard (and a possible prior Vegapunk Arc), I think Luffy awakens the Gomu Gomu No Mi. This would be needed to counter the Tremor Fruit, and some sort of Rubber Domain absorbs the earthquake devastation. And would be fitting as possibly Luffy's final Power Up.
As the title says, Gear 4th has run its due course. It’s simply ineffective vs Kaido with Luffy still having the same drawback it was introduced with back in Dressrosa. The drawback isn’t the only reason why G4 is ineffective vs Kaido but that on top of G4’s firepower frankly not being enough makes it inefficient and borderline useless in the hopes of defeating Kaido.
Luffy first gave off the impression that the haki drain problem was minimized to a favorable degree, as was seemingly implied with his frequent usage of it earlier in the raid:
Would’ve used it for a 3rd time had it not been for Yamato intervening:
You’d think with Luffy’s willingness to pretty much spam a form that previously took a toll on his haki reserves that he’s minimized the problem somewhat. But naw turns out the dude passes out in the middle of the most pivotal battle and has to be carried figuratively and literally by Zoro:
Seemingly defenseless to the point where he’d be susceptible to getting biten to death:
If Luffy could have stayed in G4 for a longer period of time, things wouldn’t be half bad. But even if he could, G4 simply lacks the firepower needed to put down Kaido. Atleast with the likes of Doflamingo, Cracker and to a lesser degree Katakuri...multiple bouts of G4 would be enough but not enough for Kaido even with advanced armament haki. This has already been well evidenced in the first bout of its usage in this fight.
Let me briefly run by all the attacks Luffy has landed on Kaido whilst in Gear 4th:
In chapter 1001, Luffy goes in for a Kong Gun:
*
As evidenced by the blood, Luffy used advanced armament haki to induce internal damage.
Kaido laughs it off and goes into his Dragon Form.
In Dragon form Luffy lands more blows, much of which Kaido doesn’t really flinch at and labels “tricks”.
Kong Gatling put him down for a good several seconds:
However it just ultimately prompted him to go into his Hybrid Form and as of 1008, Kaido looks unfazed for the most part with a few bruises even after he presumably took more hits off panel.
So to recap, G4 is only usable for a set amount of time and after that time is up, Luffy can’t use haki for 10 mins and/or has exhausted himself to the point where he has to get carried by others. And in the time its being used, its inducing a negligible amount of damage on Kaido who a) has shrugged most of it off with no issue & b) is more than likely an awakened zoan, adding atleast heightened endurance and recuperative abilities to make matters worse.
One doesn’t have to wait for Leo Bazooka and King Kong Gun to see how G4 simply isn’t cut out to get the job done. Which can only mean a new ability is on the way. Whether that new ability is going to be awakening, gear 5th, or gear stacking isn’t clear at all, yall can shoot your shot down below or the poll. However what’s become crystal clear is that G4 is no longer Luffy’s trump card going forward . A new ability is definitely around the corner. Awakening makes the most sense to me right now. Luffy has seen atleast 2 confirmed awakened paramecia users in Kata and Doffy after all, possibly a 3rd in Cracker so you’d think he’d atleast try to tap into it.
Tho for anyone that thinks it’s too soon for Luffy to get a new gear or tap into awakening they’ve been missing out on the overarching implication of Wano’s climax and how it ties to the endgame of the series. If it wasn’t enough that Shanks said he’d meet Luffy soon, Kaido saying the victor of this fight will be “that much closer to Pirate King” pretty much spells it out for you. Luffy won’t be victorious if his best bet is a form that drains his haki like there ain’t no tomorrow and renders him weak for 10 minutes. I rest my case.
Side Note: Apologies for the dark text, I’ll try to fix that in a bit.
I wonder though why Oda introduced another two forms of G4, with very unique abilitys being suited for specific situations, if he wouldn't build upon that in some way.... Either by stacking them, or allowing Luffy to switch between these forms immediately.
Tankman= defense
Snakeman= speed/attack speed
Boundman= good alrounder/damage
And then there is still the "King Kong Gun"
which could potentially be a hint for another G4 form/attacks even greater than the "Kong" techniques
While as in your post shown, it makes sense that G4 is not the solution, something that Rayleigh pointed out as well,
I doub't Oda is going to ditch G4 asside for another power up, or at least the properties and benefits of G4. Maybe as you said Luffy taps into Awakening and that will allow him to manipulate his body the way he needs to, depending on the situation. I believe that makes more sense than Luffy suddenly turning the surroundings into rubber, cause Luffy's techniques have always been about his body structure being manipulated in one way or another.
I guess once the rooftop battle will turn into 1v1, Luffy is going to show us what ever he has up in his sleeve.
He's definitely not going to just go for another round of Boundman, only to be left on a silver plate, once the time limit kicks in.
I think he might just use more haki the next time we actually see him in action. Granted that Red Roc's fire seemingly was actual haki, that overflew his fist, similiar to how it does on blades, I think he will do that.
So G4+small bits of haki induced into internal destruction moves = ineffective and afterwards gets even penalized by its time limit
Non G4 modes + much more haki= very effective, while he has no time limit whatsoever...
Somehow the admirals for example could produce haki barriers of very high magnitude aswell or remember Sabo blowing up that Colosseum ground? They probably make use of the same mechanic, that Enma simulates with its quirk- using massive amounts of haki..
But yeah G4 alone is not going to solve that Kaido problem, that's for sure.
