We've seen in the series that Luffy's Gears are techniques created by Luffy himself, both G2, G3 and G4.
But G5 is just luffy's involuntary awakening and makes absolutely no sense he call that G5 since he did not developed it and didn't even know what was happening, he was already in nika form before saying "gear 5". Oda just threw it in there.
Why did oda spend such a long-awaited term for no reason? Just for the sake of hype?
