The means of production are still privately owned. Granted, a lot of state officials own these companies, but they are by definition privately owned. If Russia was truly communist Russia wouldn't have billionaires privately owning conglomerates.

The soviet union was never a democratic socialist society, there was no democracy whatsoever. The means of production were solely controlled by the state. All the companies where OWNED by the state. That's a key difference that you're overlooking. They were a communist regime.

The soviet union was never a democratic socialist society, there was no democracy whatsoever. The means of production were solely controlled by the state. All the companies where OWNED by the state. That's a key difference that you're overlooking. They were a communist regime.

Power in Russia is centralized,that place is run by oligarchs(mafia).But of course they are free to work,buy stuff and pay taxes.Communism abandoned the Marxist model.Communism was never about controlling the means of production actually,they used that because they thought that was the way to cease control and power.Its was all about power and power is social control.Marx book is both propaganda and strategy on how to do a revolution.Current Communists do things by controlling the media,culture,schools,universities,heavy taxation and regulations.If they have control over people's mind thnx to cultural hegemony,they will always win elections.That is exactly what happened here in Brazil in 1988.The army killed of the terrorists,but left the intellectuals run their mouth and censor cultural opposition.The result:not a right wing in sight during the elections in the 90s.This happened all over Latin America.Thnx to the internet their cultural monopoly is over,but they are far from being out of the game.They still have the upper hand when it comes to cultural adhesion.Their social engineering scheme is just too powerful and has being going on for decades.
