So far, it makes a lot of sense from a narrative perspective, regardless of what anyone wants. He's the only person we know of that's killed someone who was effectively Luffy's family, left him permanently scarred, and goes against almost everything Luffy stands for.
Powerscaling-wise, yes, having the fleet admiral used as a jump rope wouldn't be the greatest look, though no worse than how it was for the "creature" "said to be the strongest."
If it doesn't happen, shrug. If it does, the cope is going to be something else.

That is why he focused 150 chapters around waido. Wonder how much focus shanks wil get before BB murders him.
I am not saying akainu vs Luffy (endgame boss fight and not small fight) can't happen but its not guaranteed. With Imu being set up as bigger villain and sabo being a potential opponent for akainu , oda can write that way. While not as strong case as akainu , BM was still heavily built up and then discarded.

Whether or not shanks gets shanked by BB, he'll get his due from oda. That much you can be sure on.
