I think Oda will reveal the relationships between the yonkos in the story of God Valley. That's where we will understand what Kaido had against Whitebeard. I think Oda will tell us this story in the main manga because God Valley was destroyed just like Lulucia, so it will eventually become relevant.
Shanks is not your typical character. If you look at his portrayal it is clear Oda wants to present him to us as some sort of gatekeeper or whatever.
When Yonko were around at their finest the world was balanced which is something loved by Gorosei and Shanks. Why would he disrupt something he values so much?

It's not about which character you like Tej. When you drop all biases aside you can see that Shanks is the most protected and wanked character by Oda.
His crew is stronger than Beast Pirates. Surely it would cost both sides a lot but eventually Shanks would defeat Kaido.
He waited for Luffy to do it to see how the world changes if someone like Luffy does it.
To put it into different perspective. If it was Blackbeard who invaded Wano I think Shanks would join the gauntlet himself to prevent Blackbeard from taking over Wano.
Shanks could not defeat Kaido going by the fact that Kaido and Shanks fought and Kaido said this after including Shanks in the World's Top fighters.

Oda can't outright state thru Kaido that Shanks stopped him and Kaido couldn't do more to get thru Marineford to not ruin his character in readers' eyes.
No one aside Luffy inflict any relevant damage on Kaido. Doesn't matter if 500 fodders fight you before your main fight. You can't say you fought 501 people without the context on it.

Kaido lost more due him carrying Onigashima which Yamato mentions, his energy level was just leaving.
Kaido didn‘t lose because of the damage of Luffy‘s attack which Kaido could‘ve avoided plus in fact he was overpowering at the begin of their final clash.
The only reason Loda made Kaido carry Onigashima was, to nerf Kaido‘s energy level. Otherwise Oda was probably clear it wouldn‘t be to just damage Kaido. It‘s a combination of both.

Headcanon. Shanks just says that it is time to search for One Piece, just after Luffy defeated Kaido. Shanks is still stronger than Luffy so there is no bullshit in saying Shanks can defeat Kaido. Kaido himself admitted that Roger was at the top because of his Haki and that Haki is above everything. Shanks doesn't have a Devil Fruit and his mastery is Haki. Thru Haki alone he is a Yonko which means he will probably have the best Haki affinity mong the Yonko.
