Shanks is one of the Yonko and a former member of the Roger Pirates, many people hype him up as the strongest Yonko with some even saying he's the strongest character in One Piece after Whitebeard.

When you compare Shanks to the other Yonko's, Kaido and Big Mom have always been portrayed as being monsters when it comes to their durability and strength, Whitebeard was the strongest man in the world and someone who could rival Roger, and Blackbeard currently has two of the most powerful devil fruits and is growing more and more stronger.

Meanwhile Shanks is just a normal human that has very powerful haki, also when it comes to Shanks the man lost an arm to a east blue sea king and after he lost his arm Mihawk lost interest in fighting him.

Blackbeard before he got his devil fruit was able to injure Shanks.

Some people were even saying that Shanks had the highest or second highest bounty, however it turns out that he currently has the third highest or fourth depending on Dragon's bounty.

So is Shanks really the strongest Yonko and character in One Piece or was he just overhyped?

I've never heard anyone saying he is the strongest person but he is definitely top 5

Shanks has portrayal to be 1 of the strongest:

1. He inherited Roger's Straw Hat.
2. His sword Gryphon might a pair of sword that Rayleigh had in Oden's flashback (In Oden's flashback he had 2 swords and 1 of them resembled Gryphon).
3. Luffy said he would fight Shanks the last among all the yonko he targeted and the next enemy is usually stronger than the previous one.
4. Luffy said he would surpass Shanks crew.
5. Clashed with WB who was hyped by Sengoku and Garp.
6. Stopped the war in MF.
7. Blackbeard after got gura gura no mi said he was the strongest man in MF but he said it was too early for him to fight Shanks crew.
8. Probably has one of the best CoC. Oda hyped his CoC in SBS.

I think he is one of th strongest. Might be top 5.

The man is Luffy and Roger of the Middle Generation. This by Oda himself so, he is extremely powerful.

The fact that he became a Yonko 6 years ago with 1 Arm, makes Mihawk look like Garbage.

The last time he fought Mihawk was 12+years ago. Mihawk could not injure him like DFless Teach.

Not only that but Blackbeard injuring him 12 + years ago, makes Mihawk look like Garbage.

He even treats Mihawk like Garbage, but treats devil fruitless teach like a massive threat.

2 Arms Current Yonko Shanks would be Prime Roger and Prime Whitebeard level.

Seeing as 1 Arm drops him to Yonko level.

Do you ever get bored of writing absolute garbage?

OT: Yes he is overhyped by the Shank extremists, but other than that he's good.

He's still a solid top tier or else he wouldn't keep up with the others.

He has good chances to be the strongest yonko bar BB when the time comes (everybody knows BB always get stronger just like the SHs, and also he is the only one to grow through the story outside the main cast) if that isn't already the case.

Shanks has an importance really great for the story, he was there at the start, gave Luffy his hat so the will Shanks inherited from Roger and passed down to Luffy and so he is also the inspiration and role model for Luffy. Then there is BB who was also introduced very early in the story and from the start to this point he has been build to be the final villain so his importance in the story rivals Shanks and maybe (most likely) dictates that one day he will have to kill Luffy's role model aka Shanks. These 2 are characters who are pillars of the story, were planned since the beginning and developed and nurtured carefully through the story.

Kaido and BM on the other hand were introduced later, way later, in Enies lobby (Kaido at that point even had a totally different silouette) there was the first mention and post time skip the proper introduction. These 2 have not a crucial relationship with Luffy, they are just the #villain and also there is this small detail that right now Luffy is fighting with Kaido/BM while Shanks and BB are still unknown objects on the background doing their business and waiting for the story to catch on to them. This time, when the story reaches and explores Shanks and BB, will most likely be one of the final arcs if not the final when Wano will just be an arc of the past with the 2 lower yonkos, maybe already buried by the events and a memory from the past (like Doffy, Kata etc.).

Imu >> Prime Luffy >= Prime BB ~ Prime Rocks ~ Prime Roger >= Prime WB ~ Prime Garp ~ or > (?) Prime Kaidou > the rest. To become the strongest, Shanks has too many characters above him in strength.

Although my personal opinion places his strength slightly above Akainu, slightly above Mihawk, but even WSC and WSM is going to be surpassed by Prime Luffy and Prime BB. And Imu is like an unreachable level, so Shanks is most likely not the strongest.

...and also he dressed like a bum with those rags he uses as his clothes.

There are not many things we actually know about him. I don't think he's "the strongest" or "being overhyped".
I mean... What do we even know?

1. He is a Yonko. And recently we've come to know that he only reached that status four years ago (or six?). So it is pretty recent and only Blackbeard officially joined and replaced Whitebeard in position afterwards. (I don't count Luffy as he was only stated as such by Morgans who hypes him for the sake of his job).

2. He is a well respected and also a rather feared person. That is to be seen in the Summit War in Marineford: Sengoku decided to stop the War as Shanks appeared, and also let Shanks and Whitebeards Crew leave, AND to take full responsibility for it. The Marines therefore listened to a well known pirate. The same goes for the time, when Shanks met the Five Elders. They didn't decide to fight against him, but instead were welcoming him and listened to the subject he wanted to talk about.

3. He's got a bounty of over 4 million B. Bounty, as we know, is a number showing the threat level and strength of a particular person. This might involve the person't knowledge, influence and fighting abilities. It is one of the highest bounty we know.

4. He was part of Rogers Crew. He traveled through the world, and all possible blues and islands on that journey and his own later on. He even went to Raftel (Laugh Tale), and he possibly knows more to World History than the WG would like him to.

5. He does have all three types of Haki and it seems he is very good at wielding the Conquerors Haki, which makes him one of the characters who possess a great will that is able to conquer others.

What we don't know though is:

1. What he is primarily doing on his journeys.
2. His fighting capabilities as we only saw a handful of panels that showed only first clashes.
3. His Crews Strength and knowledge.
4. What his goals are.

With that in conclusion I think it is very understandable to hype him, but I think people expect too much from the things we don't know yet. We definitely know that he is powerful, a high threat for the WG, but still well respected. That makes him an interesting character, but not overhyped or underhyped.

Shanks is above Meme.

Shanks was probably a Low Top Tier with 33, when he entered the Yonkou class, and after 6 years he probably has surpassed at least Meme who's entering her decline in strength.

Kaidou, by feats, portrayal and hype is the strongest current Yonkou, until Blackbeard surpasses him.

I say Shanks loses Extreme diff to Kaidou, and well, Mihawk is just something else.
