Luffy already mastering Gear 5. Kaido wouldn't catch up anymore imo.

The anime made it clearer that both Kaido and Big Mom are not going to die from this magma. However, do you remember what lies waiting underneath Wano? My guess is that Kaido and Big Mom will take over Pluton, and the moment Wano's borders are down, they'll have some sort of world conquering agenda again.
If Kaido indeed awakened he would reach a level very few have achieved. He was already the top current bounty with 4.6 but that awakening should elevate him to 5.0-6.0, Pirate King/King of The World level.
If that were to happen we might actually see Kaido help Luffy out in the final war.
1 - Kaido was looking for a place to die. Was it just depression or did he understand it was the last prerequisite to achieve awakening?
2 - Luffy helping Kaido die and awaken means Kaido in a way is indebted to him
3 - Kaido believes in Joy Boy and both share a goal - defeat the World Government to end harassment and grant freedom

It is possible and expecting all the build-up to conclude is perfectly normal, regardless of the majority of fandom moaning about it, instead of dropping it all but Oda's writing has turned into baiting with plotlines that go nowhere. We will see soon enough but the way it all concluded in Wano and the mystery behind Kaido's and BM's fate leaves the door open for Kaido's return stronger than ever, Awakened.
