So he got off screen character growth out of no where I guess. Just ten chapters ago he was arguing with Luffy over who gets Kaido but now his character has grown enough to let Luffy and Zoro take the man who is responsible for him and his crew being tortured. Oda probably could have done a better job making the build up to this more noticeable.
