Kaido and king didnt go there expecting to find the RHP so no they didnt challenge them ( its headcanon on your part) and the fact that King wasnt defeated reinforces the aspects of them backing down from the fight as they were only 2 against a whole crew.

The point is King has better durability than Kaido as the manga spelled it out. Kaido just shits on King endurance and regen wise so he can last longer.

But lasting longer =/= more durability, its a sign of better endurance.

It seems as if King may be healing himself through his fire:

My guess is too. Along with his impenetrable wings(soon to be cut by Zori), he can also heal himself with his flames. You can see the cut marks on fire.

And a lack of fire behind King's head immediately afterwards

That would actually fit even more with his Marco parallels.

His wings are more durable than Kaido's dragon scales, and he has regeneration like Marco.

At that point, King would just be a supercharged strictly superior version of Marco.

i thought he stopped to charge the explosion, and to lure zoro into close range.

I'm not sure how the explosion works, but you'd think he's just activate it himself. It'd be easier and won't leave himself open. I think he wanted to witness Zoro's feeling of accomplishment be short lived and give way to despair as he realizes he about to be blown into kingdom come by his own hands.
