zoro's specialty is Armament. it's why he was the first straw hat to show armament haki and why he knew ryuo before Luffy did. this is much like how Sanji showed future sight before luffy did in WCI, or how Luffy used CoC early in drum island (although it was too weak to even knock fodder out back then)
The WG never actually wanted to kill Kaido that's obvious as fuck.

-Gets put to death by fodders
-Execution fails
-Fodders try 17 other methods
-It catches the attention of WG higher-ups
-They send him to Vegapunk so he could do his stuff
If the WG wanted him dead they'd have fed him another DF and be done with it, his body would've exploded.
