IMO, Hawkins dying by refusing to betray his new captain is amazing writing. He realized that constantly relying on chance was pathetic, and that he needed to act with actual loyalty/honor if he wanted to become a powerful pirate. RIP, Basil, you had a cool Fruit and some badass lines.
