Oda needs to build him up as a villain greater than Teach and Akainu. The latter two were involved in Ace’s death.

When did he fight Whitebeard? At best that was a clash. As for Kaido, well the funny thing about that is that there's no indication it was a fight, and Kaido's statement about Luffy being his 1st real fight in a long time tells us if there was a battle between the two, it couldn't be that serious.
